Mapfre SA is a public limited holding company, parent of a number of 250 controlled companies engaged in insurance, both in the Life and Non-Life lines, as well as in services, finance, securities and real estate investment, and technical management activities. Mapfre is created by the Association of Owners of Plots of Land in 1933. In 1970, Mapfre became an insurance group with Mapfre Mutualidad as the parent company (cars) and two subsidiaries Mapfre Vida (personal insurance) and Mapfre Industrial (other branches). Following the corporate restructuring carried out in 2006, all Group business activities are integrated under listed holding company Mapfre SA. The majority control of the latter is held by Fundacion Mapfre, a private foundation which undertakes non-profit activities through five specialised institutes (Social Action; Insurance Science; Culture; Prevention, Health and Environment; and Road Safety).

Today, Mapfre has majority stakes in Mapfre Caja Madrid Holding, Mapfre Re, Mapfre America and Mapfre Inmuebles and indirectly in its subsidiaries in 30 countries. Mapfre adds to its leadership in the life and non-life insurance business in Spain the development potential of its strategic presence in the main Latin American markets, as well as its international activities, with global focus, in reinsurance and assistance.

Through its subsidiaries Mapfre Re and Mapfre Asistencia, Corporación participates with majority holdings in two international development areas:

Mapfre Re, which is the only Spanish reinsurer with an international presence, holds market shares placing it among the leading reinsurance companies in Latin America, and it also operates with great prudence in other markets in Europe, the United States and Asia. This company finds itself in an ideal position to benefit from a reinsurance market, which, after several years recording bad results, may now enter a cycle of high returns.

Mapfre Asistencia, which has developed one of the largest international travel and home assistance networks competing worldwide, and which has begun the development of new activities, such as travel agencies, and other services.

The alliance between Mapfre and Caja Madrid, which was signed in 2000, boosted the development of company?s insurance operations in Spain. The creation of Mapfre ? Caja Madrid holding under which the direct insurance activities of both groups were brought together, and in which Corporación holds a majority shareholding, has contributed bancassurance operations in full-blown growth, together with the possibility of developing the bank distribution channel as a complement to the Mapfre insurance network.

Mapfre?s strength and potential lie also with its presence in America, where it has significant market shares in Non-life insurance in all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries in North and South America.]]>
