While many defense contractors focus on announcing production milestones, Hensoldt is executing a fundamental strategic pivot. The company is transitioning from being a pure hardware supplier to becoming a provider of high-margin services. The recent opening of a service and innovation center in Ukraine underscores this shift, representing a move with substantial operational implications beyond mere symbolism.

Financial Foundation and Growth Trajectory

The company's operational restructuring is built upon a robust financial base. Hensoldt's order backlog stands at €8.8 billion, marking an increase of approximately 33% compared to the previous year. A book-to-bill ratio of 1.9x indicates that new orders are being secured at nearly twice the rate that existing ones are being fulfilled. For the 2025 fiscal year, the group reported revenue of €2.46 billion. Management has set a target of around €2.75 billion for 2026, which would equate to growth of about 12%.

Shareholders are positioned to benefit directly from this performance. Following the Annual General Meeting in May 2026, a dividend of €0.55 per share is planned, up from €0.50 the prior year. The ex-dividend date is set for May 25, with payment following on May 27.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hensoldt?

In a separate development, major shareholder BlackRock made a minor adjustment to its holding. As of the reporting deadline at the end of March, its total voting rights decreased slightly from 5.20% to 5.03%. This appears to be a routine portfolio adjustment without broader strategic significance.

Leveraging Battlefield Experience for Product Development

The new service center in Ukraine enables the country's armed forces to maintain and repair air defense radars and other systems locally, eliminating the need for time-consuming transfers abroad. This accelerates maintenance cycles and reduces system downtime. For Hensoldt, this local presence offers a critical advantage: feedback from the battlefield can be translated into product improvements at a significantly faster pace. Ukrainian operators possess combat experience that no other Hensoldt customer can currently match.

Concurrently, the company is driving a major capacity expansion. From 2027 onward, it aims to produce approximately 1,000 radars annually, with a focus on air defense and counter-drone systems. To secure the supply chain for this increase, Hensoldt has signed an agreement with United Monolithic Semiconductors (UMS). By 2030, UMS is slated to deliver a total of 900,000 Gallium Nitride semiconductor modules—key components that determine the range, precision, and energy efficiency of radar systems.

The Upcoming Litmus Test

The first quarter 2026 results, expected in May, will provide an initial practical test for Hensoldt's new direction. This report must demonstrate how effectively the service strategy is translating into measurable margin improvements and the pace at which the record order backlog is being converted into actual revenue. Only then can a clear assessment be made on whether the strategic transformation is delivering tangible results on the financial statements.
