Amazon's $12 Billion AI Infrastructure Gamble Faces Market Scrutiny
24.02.2026 - 17:11:14 | boerse-global.deAmazon has unveiled plans to commit $12 billion to construct new data centers in Louisiana, marking its single largest investment to date in artificial intelligence infrastructure. This strategic move, championed by CEO Andy Jassy to fortify the company's cloud and AI dominance, has been met with investor skepticism. Since early February, Amazon's share price has declined by approximately 18%.
Unprecedented Capital Expenditure Plans
The Louisiana project is a cornerstone of a far broader capital investment strategy. In early February, Amazon announced projected capital expenditures nearing $200 billion by 2026, a figure that significantly surpasses Wall Street's expectations of $146 billion. The market's reaction was swift and severe: a nine-day selloff erased over $450 billion in market capitalization, representing the longest losing streak for the stock since 2006.
Investor apprehension stems from doubts over whether these massive outlays will translate into near-term profit growth. This concern persists despite a strong performance from Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company's cloud division, which posted 24% growth in Q4 2025—its strongest expansion in 13 quarters. The sheer scale of the planned spending has overshadowed these operational successes.
Louisiana Emerges as a Data Center Hub
The E-commerce and cloud giant confirmed yesterday that it will build multiple data center facilities in Caddo and Bossier parishes in northwestern Louisiana. This constitutes Amazon's first data center presence in the state. The company anticipates the complexes will create 540 full-time data center jobs and support an estimated 1,700 additional indirect roles in the region, spanning electricians, climate control technicians, and security specialists.
Construction, with STACK Infrastructure as the building partner, is set to begin imminently. Amazon has committed to invest up to $400 million in local water infrastructure and will cover the full cost of required new energy infrastructure. According to the company, the facilities will exclusively utilize surplus water from the local environment.
Louisiana is rapidly becoming a focal point for major tech infrastructure. Meta is already developing its over $10 billion Hyperion project in Richland Parish, and AI firm Anthropic has plans for a $10 billion center in West Feliciana Parish. The state's appeal lies in its competitive energy costs, available land, and attractive government incentives.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?
A Notable Exit Adds Pressure
Adding to the stock's headwinds was a regulatory filing from Berkshire Hathaway. The conglomerate, in what was the last quarterly portfolio snapshot under Warren Buffett's CEO tenure before Greg Abel assumed leadership in early 2026, sold roughly 7.7 million Amazon shares in Q4 2025. This reduced Berkshire's position by more than 77%, slashing the value of its remaining stake from about $2.1 billion to around $460 million.
While Berkshire had been gradually trimming its Amazon holding in preceding quarters, the substantial year-end selloff underscores a cautious stance toward the company's current valuation.
The Hyperscale Arms Race
Amazon is engaged in a fierce competitive battle with fellow tech titans Microsoft, Google, and Meta. Collectively, these hyperscalers have announced capital expenditure plans approaching $700 billion for 2026. The race to secure superior AI training capacity and cloud infrastructure is defining the strategic direction of these companies, with the ultimate winner far from certain.
The critical question for Amazon is the timeline for converting its enormous infrastructure investments into tangible revenue and margin growth. The coming quarters will reveal whether the $12 billion wager on Louisiana and the overarching $200 billion program can win over a currently skeptical Wall Street.
