Xiaomi's September Showdown: Can LPDDR6 Leadership Break the Stock's Downtrend?

The timing could hardly be more pointed. Xiaomi is preparing to unveil the 18 Fold in September as the world's first smartphone equipped with LPDDR6 memory — a technological first that arrives just as its share price sits roughly 53 percent below the 52-week high of EUR 6.54 reached late last September. The stock closed Friday at EUR 3.07, up 2.4 percent on the day, but that modest bounce does little to mask a bruising stretch: a 29 percent decline year-to-date and a 48 percent slide over the trailing twelve months.
A Memory-First Strategy Takes Shape
The centerpiece of Xiaomi's autumn offensive is the partnership with Chinese memory maker CXMT, confirmed Friday on Weibo by CEO Lei Jun. CXMT has begun mass production of LPDDR6 — a feat it claims to have pulled off less than twelve months after the previous standard, LPDDR5, was introduced. The new memory delivers transfer rates up to 12,800 Mbit/s and is available in 16-gigabyte-per-chip configurations, positioning CXMT ahead of its South Korean rivals as an early supplier of the next-generation standard.
For Xiaomi, the tie-up is more than a supply-chain headline. The 18 Fold pairs the CXMT memory with Xiaomi's in-house Xring O3 processor, a 3-nanometer chip that can drive LPDDR6 at a bandwidth of 113.8 gigabytes per second. The same processor is slated for the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max, a 13-inch tablet with a battery exceeding 10,000 milliampere-hours and 120-watt fast charging. A separate launch, the Redmi 17 5G, hits India on September 3 with a 7,900-milliampere-hour battery and a Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chip.
The company says it has poured more than 20 billion yuan into chip development, building a team of over 3,000 engineers in the process. That scale of investment carries an implicit promise: the 18 Fold must win real market share, not merely serve as a technology demonstration.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?
The Geopolitical Wrinkle
There is, however, a political dimension that neither company can ignore. The US Department of Defense designated CXMT as a Chinese military company in January 2025 — a classification CXMT is contesting through legal channels. The stakes extend well beyond Xiaomi: Apple is reportedly seeking US approval to source CXMT chips for its iPhones and MacBooks, underscoring how central the Chinese manufacturer has become to the broader industry.
For Xiaomi, the risk is direct. Any tightening of US export restrictions targeting Chinese memory makers would hit its supply chain regardless of the legal proceedings. The stock's 30-day volatility of 58 percent suggests the market has yet to fully price in the uncertainty surrounding this strategy.
What Would Change the Calculus
The bull case rests on first-mover advantage. Samsung, according to reports, has yet to announce any LPDDR6 devices, giving Xiaomi a window to establish itself as the reference point for the new memory standard. A strong 18 Fold launch could also bolster confidence in the broader chip strategy — including the separate 3-nanometer AI chip in development for future electric vehicles, an effort aimed at reducing reliance on Nvidia for intelligent driving functions.
Technically, the stock sits only about five percent above its 50-day average of EUR 2.92, leaving room for recovery if demand signals turn positive. Friday's 2.4 percent gain suggests the market is at least willing to acknowledge the chip news in the short term.
The bear case is equally clear. A single product highlight does little to address underlying demand weakness in the core business, and the stock's 15 percent slide over the past 30 days shows how fragile the recent stabilization has been. The September launch — and the first sales figures and customer reactions that follow — will provide the clearest test yet of whether Xiaomi's memory coup is a genuine inflection point or simply another headline in a difficult year.
