Wall Street Trims Gold Targets as Holiday Buyers Fail to Offset the Yield Squeeze

Gold wrapped up a bruising week at $4,144.04 an ounce, a 3.4% decline that left the metal 26% below its 52-week peak and trading under its 50-day moving average of $4,336.51. The retreat came as two of the industry's better-known forecasting houses cut their medium-term targets within 24 hours of each other, underscoring how firmly the macro backdrop has turned against the non-yielding asset.
Forecast Cuts Signal a Longer Hawkish Stretch
Wells Fargo Investment Institute trimmed its end-2027 gold range to $5,200–$5,400 per troy ounce on Wednesday, down from a prior $5,400–$5,600 target. The institute pointed to pending Federal Reserve rate hikes and the resilient dollar as the chief drags. HSBC followed on Thursday, lowering its 2026 average forecast to $4,490 an ounce and its 2027 estimate to $4,825, according to Reuters. The bank also flagged rising oil prices as an added headwind alongside monetary tightening.
The revisions carry a common message: institutional strategists are positioning for an extended period of elevated borrowing costs. When fixed-income instruments offer attractive yields and financing grows more expensive, gold's lack of a coupon becomes a liability for portfolio managers.
Asia's Festive Season Meets a Price-Sensitive Consumer
Hopes for a demand-side cushion rest largely on Asia. China's "Golden Week" — a holiday running through October 7 that historically drives jewelry purchases — began at the start of the month, while India is gearing up for Diwali and the wedding season that follows. The World Gold Council noted, however, that Chinese demand has been held back this year by high price levels and muted consumer confidence; domestic premiums over the international benchmark had earlier shrunk to zero.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Gold?
StoneX analyst Rhona O'Connell said on September 29 that Indian buying, alongside central bank purchases, could offer support. She cautioned that record-high quotes risk deterring price-sensitive shoppers, with a weak monsoon further eroding rural spending power.
Speculators Head for the Exits
Financial investors have been retreating in tandem with jewelry buyers. CFTC data for the week through September 22 showed asset managers cutting net-long positions to their lowest since late July, while the World Gold Council reported 1.6 tonnes of outflows from gold ETFs in the second-to-last week of September.
Rising Treasury yields and geopolitical tensions have underpinned the dollar, dulling the appeal of assets that pay no interest. Softer economic readings around the turn of the month — including subdued inflation figures and Friday's US jobs report showing just 29,000 positions added in September, against economist expectations of 90,000 — briefly revived hopes of a slower tightening path. Gold climbed more than 1% intraday on that print before the move fizzled, capped by firm bond yields. Yields on 10- and 30-year Treasuries had reached their highest levels since 2002 the previous day, according to Reuters, reinforcing the dollar and pulling the rug from under the short-lived commodity rally.
Friday's session alone saw gold shed 0.8%. With the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting set for October 27–28, traders are likely to scrutinize every economic and inflation release for clues on whether the hiking cycle will continue or the central bank will shift course.
