UBS Nears Finish Line on Credit Suisse Merger as US Growth Takes Center Stage

UBS says Credit Suisse integration is about 90% done, with completion set for end-2026, as it pushes US expansion and faces a Swiss capital debate.

UBS is entering the home stretch of its absorption of Credit Suisse, with roughly three months of operational integration left and about 90% of targeted synergies already banked. CEO Sergio Ermotti, speaking to CNBC, put the full completion of the process at the end of 2026 — a timeline that keeps the lender's biggest restructuring in years on track even as a separate policy fight simmers in Bern.

With the merger winding down, the Swiss giant is sharpening its focus on the United States, where management sees a strong foothold as essential to the future of its global wealth management franchise. The bank has been plowing resources into its American operations and recently secured a broader US banking license. Ermotti has not ruled out acquisitions stateside either.

Home Base Debate Refuses to Fade

The push abroad comes against a backdrop of persistent speculation about where UBS should ultimately be domiciled. The trigger is a looming regulatory squeeze in Switzerland, where the upper chamber of parliament backed tougher capital requirements for foreign subsidiaries roughly two weeks ago.

On October 1, US asset manager Artisan Partners went public with its demand that the board move the bank out of Switzerland, arguing in a letter that the proposed rules would tie up billions in additional capital. The bank itself has put numbers on the burden: covering foreign holdings with 90% hard core capital (CET1) would require an extra USD 16 billion in CET1 at UBS AG alone. Adding other requirements cited by the group, the total additional need since the Credit Suisse takeover swells to about USD 33 billion — a gap that lays bare how far the lender and its home policymakers have drifted apart.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying UBS?

Ermotti, for his part, continues to argue that keeping the headquarters in Switzerland serves the economy, clients and shareholders alike. Still, he said management will scrutinize exactly what steps are needed to protect shareholder interests. Nordea moved quickly to shoot down talk that its own leadership had held talks with the Swiss, dismissing the reports outright.

Market Reaction and Analyst Positioning

Investors have taken the integration progress in stride. The stock closed yesterday at EUR 42.95 with a gain of 1.3%, and today added another 1.3% to EUR 43.52, valuing the group at roughly EUR 130.10 billion. Since the start of the year, the shares are up 8.0%.

Ahead of third-quarter results due October 28, 2026, the analyst community is leaning constructive. JPMorgan's Kian Abouhossein reaffirmed an "Overweight" rating and a CHF 50 price target, keeping the name on the bank's focus list while nudging earnings estimates in his valuation model. Goldman Sachs raised its target from CHF 47 to CHF 49, maintained a "Neutral" stance and flagged a strong third quarter in the offing.

One day before the earnings release, UBS will tidy up legacy liabilities: on October 27, 2026, it will redeem early all outstanding senior unsecured notes totaling JPY 8,300,000,000 due 2027, originally issued by Credit Suisse Group AG. Media reports suggest no immediate merger plans are on the table despite the relocation chatter. With integration nearly wrapped, the real test now shifts to whether the bank can deliver on international growth.
