UBS Lifts Wienerberger Stake to 4.37% While Cutting Its Price Target to EUR 14.50
Published on 10/18/2026 at 19:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deVienna — A single Friday trading session delivered two contrasting signals on Wienerberger. The Swiss banking giant UBS Group AG disclosed that it had raised its position in the Austrian building materials group to 4.37%, up from 3.96% in its previous filing, after crossing the reporting threshold in the middle of the week. The bulk of the holding is made up of financial instruments rather than direct share ownership.
On the same day, UBS analyst Julian Radlinger trimmed his price target on the stock to EUR 14.50 while keeping a sell rating — a reminder that a bigger stake does not necessarily mean a brighter view of the company's near-term prospects.
Shares in the brick and pipe maker closed Friday at EUR 16.18, putting the group's market value at EUR 1.68 billion. The stock had earlier this month touched its 52-week low of EUR 15.03.
Housing Slump and Cost Inflation Bite
The operational backdrop explains much of the caution. Residential construction remains in the doldrums in key overseas markets, with the UK and North America singled out as particularly weak. At the same time, sharp increases in energy, raw material and transport costs have squeezed margins, and Wienerberger has not been able to pass the full burden on to customers through its own price increases.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?
Management has responded by accelerating cost-cutting and launching a comprehensive strategic review of the business. The aim is to align the cost base with a smaller construction market and to stabilize group profitability. Details of the package — and how deep the cuts will go — are due on November 12, when Wienerberger publishes its nine-month report alongside interim results of the review.
Guidance Points to a Subdued Third Quarter
The company's own forecasts sketch the scale of the challenge. Following a profit warning, Wienerberger expects full-year 2026 operating EBITDA of between EUR 640 million and EUR 650 million. For the third quarter, management is targeting revenue of roughly EUR 1.2 billion to EUR 1.3 billion and operating EBITDA of about EUR 170 million to EUR 180 million.
Weak demand and higher costs for energy, raw materials and logistics are cited as the main drags. Before the November update, the company will have an early opportunity to explain its strategic direction at the GEWINN trade fair in Vienna on October 22.
Analysts See Little Relief Before 2027
The analyst community is keeping its expectations in check. Weak volumes in Western Europe and North America remain the central concern, and meaningful recovery drivers — European infrastructure spending among them — are not expected to kick in until 2027.
Nearer-term revisions have skewed negative. Vienna's Wiener Privatbank adjusted its target to EUR 16.40 on October 12 while retaining a hold rating, pointing to likely capacity adjustments and temporary production shutdowns. UBS, for its part, cut its earnings estimates after the company's guidance reduction, with Radlinger flagging continued weakness in residential construction and pressure on margins.
Until Europe's key markets show a clear pickup, the shares lack a short-term catalyst for a sustained uptrend — leaving the November 12 update as the next real test of whether Wienerberger's cost measures can steady the operating result.
