UBS Builds 4.37% Wienerberger Stake as Brickmaker Girds for November Strategy Reveal
Published on 10/20/2026 at 04:52 | Editorial boerse-global.deWienerberger's shareholder register has shifted at a moment when the Austrian building-materials group can least afford distractions. UBS Group AG lifted its voting stake in the brick and pipe maker to 4.37% as of October 14, up from the 3.96% it disclosed for October 8, according to mandatory filings. The Swiss bank's holding splits between 1.09% in directly held shares and 3.28% in financial instruments, against 0.71% and 3.26% respectively in the earlier notification.
The accumulation came during a punishing stretch for the stock. Wienerberger closed Monday at EUR 15.92, down 48% since the start of the year and just 5.9% above its 52-week low. On the day the UBS filing surfaced, the shares were off 1.4% at EUR 15.95.
A Guidance Cut and a Strategic Review
Behind the weak sentiment sits a deteriorating operating picture. Earlier this month the company trimmed its 2026 operating EBITDA guidance to EUR 640–650 million, citing persistently soft demand and accelerating cost inflation. For the third quarter of 2026, management guided toward revenue of roughly EUR 1.2–1.3 billion and operating EBITDA of about EUR 170–180 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?
Wienerberger's response has been twofold: deeper cost reductions and a strategic review whose detailed measures are due on November 12, when the group publishes full results for the first three quarters. From Friday, the company enters its official quiet period ahead of that release, meaning management will offer no further commentary on trading until then.
Analysts Split on the Recovery Path
The sell side has been recalibrating. Berenberg cut its price target to EUR 19.00 from EUR 25.00 roughly two weeks ago while keeping a Buy rating. Jefferies initiated coverage on October 13 with a Hold and a EUR 16 target, noting that near-term recovery prospects look limited. Market attention, the broker added, is fixed on how the strategic review unfolds.
Product Push Continues
Even with the sector under pressure, Wienerberger is expanding its offering. According to media reports, Wienerberger Österreich has added the Tondach Tonova ceramic brick, developed specifically for ventilated building envelopes, to its range. The facade product is manufactured at the company's Gleinstätten plant in Styria, part of an effort to capture additional share in the durable building-facade market.
Before the numbers land, Wienerberger will present itself at the GEWINN trade fair in Vienna on Thursday. Whether the savings and strategic measures unveiled in mid-November can genuinely lift the mood will only become clear when the interim statement is published.
