Sivers Semiconductors Faces SEK 42.9M Charge as Stock Rally Boosts Tax Liability

There is an irony at the heart of Sivers Semiconductors' recent rally: the very strength of its share price is about to weigh on its income statement. The Swedish photonics group has flagged a non-cash charge of SEK 42.9 million for social security contributions in the second quarter of 2026, a direct consequence of the stock's dramatic climb from SEK 10.71 to SEK 63.15 during the period.

The accounting quirk stems from how Sweden calculates employer social security obligations tied to share-based employee programmes. When the underlying equity appreciates, so too does the tax base for these liabilities. The result is a purely bookkeeping exercise — no cash leaves the company, and operations remain untouched — but it will nonetheless dent the headline numbers when Sivers publishes its interim report on 27 August before the Nasdaq Stockholm open.

A Sector Tailwind Meets a New Development Deal

The charge arrives amid a flurry of activity that has kept the stock firmly in the spotlight. Chief among the operational news is a fresh development programme with SemiNex, valued at an initial US$3.4 million, targeting next-generation indium phosphide (InP) light sources for interconnect applications in AI data centres. The partnership positions Sivers squarely in the fast-growing market for optical components in data centre infrastructure.

That thematic exposure received an additional boost earlier this month when reports surfaced of a potential US import ban on new Chinese optical transceiver models. The sector-wide rally that followed, first reported by Reuters, lifted manufacturers of optical components across the board — Sivers among them.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Sivers Semiconductors?

Capital Raise and a Fleeting Short Position

The corporate calendar has been equally busy on the capital side. Roughly two weeks ago, Bootstrap Europe IV SCSp exercised all of its outstanding warrants, subscribing to 1,659,015 new ordinary shares at SEK 4.53 each. The transaction brought in approximately SEK 7.5 million and lifted the total share count from 355,081,317 to 356,740,332. Since that exercise, the stock has advanced 39.2 per cent.

The warrant conversion, though modest in size, adds to the narrative of a company in motion. So too does a curious episode on the short-selling front: Jane Street briefly appeared on 5 August as a publicly disclosed short seller in Sivers shares, only to close the position two days later. D. E. Shaw, meanwhile, has built a fresh short position. Such rapid-fire positioning suggests tactical trading rather than a fundamental bearish thesis, though it underscores the jittery sentiment surrounding the stock.

Volatility Remains the Defining Feature

Friday's close saw the shares at EUR 3.83, up 5.2 per cent on the day. The one-month gain stands at 8.0 per cent, but the stock still trades a hefty 63 per cent below its 52-week high of EUR 10.23, reached in early June. It also sits roughly 23 per cent under its 50-day moving average of EUR 4.95.

The annualised 30-day volatility of 170 per cent tells its own story: this is a stock that moves hard in both directions, where capital measures and accounting anomalies can trigger outsized swings at short notice. For investors, the upcoming quarterly report will offer a first glimpse of how the payroll charge colours the bottom line — and whether the recent operational momentum can outshine the bookkeeping drag.
