Silver Retreats as Inflation Surprise and Rate Fears Converge
Published on 10/17/2026 at 09:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deA hotter-than-expected US inflation reading has knocked silver off its stride, with the metal briefly slipping below the $58-per-ounce mark this week as traders scrambled to price in a more stubborn Federal Reserve.
The September consumer price index came in at 3.7% year-on-year, the government reported Wednesday, topping the 3.6% consensus forecast. Commodity desks responded with immediate selling, betting that sticky price pressures will keep the Fed in restrictive mode for longer than previously assumed.
Yields and the Dollar Do the Damage
The mechanics behind the slide ran through the currency and bond markets. A firmer US dollar made the metal more expensive for buyers outside the dollar bloc, while rising yields dulled the appeal of non-yielding assets such as silver compared with interest-bearing paper.
The retreat extended a rough patch for the metal. Over a seven-day stretch, the COMEX front-month contract shed 6.5%, settling at $57.13 an ounce on Friday. By Thursday, however, buyers stepped back in: falling yields helped the front month recover 3.2% to close at $57.60.
Even after that bounce, silver sits roughly 53% below its 52-week high of $121.78, a peak struck at the end of January.

December Hike Bets Firm Up
Rate expectations have shifted markedly. According to CME Group's FedWatch gauge, futures markets now assign about a 90% probability to another US rate increase in December. The Fed's target range currently stands at 3.75% to 4.00% following September's move, and the central bank is widely expected to hold steady at its meeting on October 27-28.
The rate story has also widened the gold-silver ratio, which stretched from 69.1-to-1 the previous Friday to 73.2-to-1 — a shift that left silver trailing the broader precious-metals complex.
Industrial Cracks Show Beneath the Surface
Beyond monetary policy, demand-side worries are mounting. Bob Iaccino of CME Group pointed to headwinds in the semiconductor sector as a drag on industrial silver consumption. Because so much of the metal goes into industrial applications, its price is far more sensitive to economic slowdown signals than pure investment gold.
The CPM Group sees added pressure on industrial usage. In a market note, its analysts argued that current price levels are triggering substitution processes, with manufacturers reducing the amount of silver used per component produced. The firm sees scope for another short-term selloff but remains constructive on the segment over the coming months.
Vault Stocks Edge Higher
Physical inventories also drew attention. Silver stocks registered at COMEX grew modestly in midweek, rising 1.2 million to 333.2 million ounces. Of that total, 103.1 million ounces sat in the immediately deliverable category, with 230.1 million ounces in other eligible holdings.
On the corporate side, miner Guanajuato Silver reported third-quarter consolidated output of 392,138 ounces of silver. Total production reached 683,675 silver-equivalent ounces, a 13.7% gain on the prior quarter, which the company attributed to higher throughput at several operations while work at the Valenciana complex was paused.
Data Watch Into Late October
Traders will spend the coming sessions parsing fresh US releases — housing starts, weekly jobless claims and preliminary purchasing managers' indices — for clues on how sturdy the economy looks heading into the Fed's late-October decision. Until then, economic prints and yield moves are likely to set the tone for silver.
