ServiceNow's OpenAI Tie-Up and a 36% Cash Margin Aren't the Hurdle — the cRPO Number Is

ServiceNow spent Wednesday trying to answer two questions at once: whether artificial intelligence is a threat to its business or a feature it can sell, and whether its growth can hold up as the bar keeps rising. The stock's gain of 3.8% on the day suggests investors gave the company partial credit. It settles neither question.

The expanded partnership with OpenAI is the more eye-catching half of the story. ServiceNow said it will build an integration for ChatGPT and connect OpenAI's models and agents to its own workflows. That is a concrete strategic answer to how the company intends to fold AI into its product set, and it undercuts the simplest version of the bear case — that ServiceNow is a bystander watching AI development happen around it.

The caveat matters just as much. A planned technical connection is not a proven business result. Investors should keep the partnership separate from the linkages still on the drawing board; anyone reading a guaranteed growth spurt into Wednesday's announcement is skipping the economic proof.

The Numbers Behind the Skepticism

ServiceNow reported subscription revenue of $3.988 billion for the third quarter of 2026, up 21% from a year earlier. That figure sits awkwardly beside the claim that AI is already cannibalizing established enterprise software — though it does not dispose of longer-term risk either. A growing business can still come under valuation pressure if investors expect a different dynamic ahead.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

What drew scrutiny was the forward view. Guidance for fourth-quarter growth in short-term remaining performance obligations, or cRPO, came in at roughly 18% to 18.5%, depending on the report, below what the market had modeled. Against that, ServiceNow raised its full-year 2026 subscription revenue forecast to a range of $15.780 billion to $15.790 billion and lifted its free cash flow margin target to 36%.

The apparent contradiction resolves once current results and forward expectations are kept apart. A higher annual forecast does not by itself answer the question of the growth rate that follows. Nor does a disappointing outlook render already-booked revenue worthless. Holding both statements at once is the investor's job.

A Sector Under Pressure, a Stock Under Scrutiny

The market's reaction had company-specific and sector-wide ingredients. Reuters reported Thursday that the earnings miss overshadowed the raised guidance, and software stocks broadly came under pressure after disappointing results from ServiceNow and Fortinet, with worries about AI-driven disruption weighing on the group.

Analyst moves reflected the same tension. StoneX cut its price target to $150 from $165 on Thursday while keeping a buy rating, according to media reports. A lower target paired with a positive recommendation is no independent proof of the stock's appeal — it shows that a more cautious valuation and a fundamentally constructive view can coexist. A price-target cut is not, by itself, a verdict that the business model is finished.

The takeaway is that neither the blanket fear of AI nor the OpenAI partnership offers a clean all-clear. ServiceNow is growing and is building the technical bridge to OpenAI. What would justify a more durable re-rating is evidence that the collaboration turns into hard additional business. The cooperation opens a door; it does not walk through it.
