SanDisk's DRAM Problem That Isn't Its Own

A 7.2% slide and a 6.9% rebound inside a few sessions tells you more about the memory sector's mood swings than about SanDisk's order book.

The stock closed Friday at EUR 1,160.00, caught in a broad selloff across memory names, then jumped 6.9% to EUR 1,240.00 at the start of the new trading week. Neither move came with a company release attached. The trigger for the downdraft was a report roughly a week earlier that China's ChangXin Memory had made progress on a denser 4F² DRAM design — enough to revive old fears of oversupply and falling prices. The rebound, by contrast, was pure macro relief: easing inflation and oil-price worries, plus renewed optimism around artificial intelligence, were sufficient to lift tech and semiconductor stocks across the board.

The mismatch is hard to miss. SanDisk specialises in NAND flash. The Chinese technology milestone concerns DRAM. A reflex exit from the shares largely ignored that distinction in the product portfolio.

What the tape is missing

Eric Cherrstrom, Vice President of Market Intelligence at SanDisk, points to a structural shift rather than a new financial forecast. Persistently strong NAND demand, combined with advances in manufacturing technology, is underpinning a fundamental re-rating of the revenue base the memory industry can sustain, he argues. Where cyclical overcapacity once produced sharp price collapses at regular intervals, modern architectures and new applications in servers and end devices are creating a steadier demand floor. For SanDisk, that means technology maturity and margin discipline are moving closer together than in past cycles.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?

That reading of the business sits awkwardly against the share price. At EUR 1,240.00, the stock is still 40% below its 52-week high of EUR 2,060.00 — a discount built during months when rate concerns and sector doubts dominated semiconductor valuations.

Design wins that ignore the daily tape

Long-term industrial partnerships rarely track the mood of the trading floor, and SanDisk has been stacking them up. On Wednesday the company said it would be the exclusive supplier of flash memory solutions for Meta's VR glasses, hardware slated for spring 2027. The arrangement covers microSD Express cards tested by Meta as well as USB-C flash drives. Reliable large orders in immersive devices give memory makers a pillar to cushion demand swings.

The consumer side is moving in parallel. SanDisk introduced its Guardian series on 13 October, a line of durable storage products aimed at dashcams and home security cameras — segments that demand uninterrupted video recording. Capacities run from 32GB to 512GB, and the 512-gigabyte dashcam card was rated in testing for up to 40,000 hours of recording. Announcements like these seldom move a heavyweight's quote on their own, but they map out a strategy of building margin-rich niches away from plain commodity memory.

Two upgrades, one earnings test

Wall Street has been supportive from both directions. Zacks Research raised the stock from "Hold" to "Strong Buy" on Thursday, with media reports citing the recent strategic moves and the risk-reward profile as the rationale. Mizuho had already lifted its price target on 6 October to $2,050 from $1,875 while keeping an Outperform rating.

Those calls now face a hard test. SanDisk has scheduled first-quarter fiscal 2027 results for 29 October. Only the numbers will show whether robust NAND demand actually held margins — and whether the memory selloff was overdone. Shareholders also have a 17 November annual general meeting ahead, with votes on the board, executive compensation and the appointment of the auditor on the agenda. Until then, the stock stays tightly tethered to sentiment across the technology sector.
