Hensoldt's Ukraine Satellite Deal Adds to a Growing Defense Electronics Backlog

Hensoldt shares climbed 3.4% to EUR 82.08 after Kyiv confirmed a cooperation agreement with the German sensor specialist covering satellite technology for Ukraine's ground-based air defense. The deal emerged during Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to the Ukrainian capital, where several direct pacts with German defense contractors were unveiled alongside a broader aid package.
Merz pledged EUR 1.35 billion in German assistance to Kyiv, and Hensoldt was named among the selected partners for new armament projects, together with Diehl Defence and Quantum Systems. No financial details of the satellite technology contract were disclosed. Ukraine's leadership put the total volume of planned industrial projects at more than EUR 8.5 billion, while German government sources cited a figure of roughly EUR 6.5 billion.
For Hensoldt, the arrangement extends an existing footprint in the country. The company had already supplied TRML-4D radars for Ukrainian air defense and established partnerships for system integration.
Analyst Support Builds on Operational Momentum
The news drew a favorable response from the market. Bank of America and Kepler Cheuvreux both rated the stock positively, pointing to sustained demand in the reconnaissance and air defense segments. The fresh agreements underscore the role of modern sensors and space-based data in countering missile and drone attacks.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hensoldt?
Kepler Cheuvreux upgraded the shares from "Hold" to "Buy" with a EUR 90 price target. Analyst Aymeric Poulain cited a buying opportunity following earlier valuation discounts across the sector, along with the prospect of third-quarter results beating expectations. Bank of America's David Holmes raised his target to EUR 94, reaffirmed a buy recommendation and added the company to a selection list of European small- and mid-caps.
Underpinning that confidence is Hensoldt's operating performance. The group reported a doubling of order intake to EUR 2.81 billion for the first half of 2026, while its order backlog reached EUR 10.3 billion.
Bavaria Backs Capacity Expansion as Bundeswehr Places Optarion Order
Industrial groundwork is advancing in parallel. On September 28, Bavarian Economy Minister Hubert Aiwanger assured the company of the state's support for its industrial ramp-up. Talks centered on reliable investment conditions, meeting skilled-labor requirements and resilient supply chains to accompany planned capacity expansions.
Demand for modern defense electronics showed no sign of easing on September 9, when the Bundeswehr procurement agency BAAINBw awarded a EUR 15 million development contract for the further evolution of the Optarion combat management system.
Guidance Intact Despite Discount to 52-Week High
Even after the recent advance, the stock trades at a 30% discount to its 52-week high. On the previous Friday it added 2.4% to close at EUR 79.38, outperforming European sector peers including Rheinmetall and RENK. The move reflected a continuing revaluation across the European defense industry, as investors rotate back toward companies positioned to benefit directly from rising defense budgets following a phase of market-wide de-rating.
Hensoldt at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Management has kept its full-year 2026 forecast unchanged: revenue of around EUR 2.75 billion and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 18.5% to 19%. Additional large orders from European initiatives and direct support for Ukraine are expected to keep production capacity for radar systems and electronic sensor equipment booked for years ahead.
Two dates now loom for investors. On November 5, Hensoldt publishes its quarterly statement for the first nine months, with the market looking for evidence of how the order backlog feeds into the financials and whether the annual guidance will be adjusted. A capital markets day in London follows on November 10, giving management a platform to set out its medium-term strategy and technology initiatives to an international audience.
