Hensoldt's Cash Turn Is the Real Test as Order Intake Nearly Doubles
Published on 11/06/2026 at 05:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deHensoldt's third-quarter free cash flow swung into positive territory, but the defence electronics group still burned through €104 million over the first nine months of 2026 — a figure that frames the central question for investors: can a company sitting on a record order book convert that demand into spendable cash?
The nine-month cash outflow compares with a shortfall of €119 million in the same period a year earlier, while the third quarter alone delivered a positive €32 million. Whether that quarterly contribution marks the start of something more durable will be the key yardstick when Hensoldt next reports. For the full year, management is targeting a free cash flow conversion of roughly 50% and a net debt-to-EBITDA ratio of about 1.5 — concrete markers against which the financial execution of its growth can be judged.
Orders surge, revenue lags
The demand side is not in doubt. Order intake for the first nine months reached €3,564 million, up 76.7% year on year, with Eurofighter radars and targeting systems for the Puma and Schakal platforms named as the main drivers, according to Reuters. Revenue, by contrast, rose 21.3% to €1,863 million, and adjusted EBITDA climbed 33.0% to €281 million.
That gap explains the raised guidance. Hensoldt now expects full-year revenue of around €2,800 million and has specified an adjusted EBITDA margin of roughly 19.0%. Hitting the top line would require about €937 million in the final quarter — some 35% more than the third quarter delivered. The upgraded forecast signals confidence, though the heavy year-end workload means the fourth quarter carries outsized weight in proving how robust that outlook really is.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hensoldt?
Profitability already offers an encouraging data point: the adjusted EBITDA margin reached 20.6% in the third quarter of 2026, up from 17.6% a year earlier. Revenue momentum and earnings quality now need to convince in tandem. A strong closing quarter would be especially valuable if the cash flow confirms the financial delivery at the same time.
Analysts split despite the beat
Jefferies and JPMorgan both reaffirmed their differing stances after the quarterly figures. Jefferies kept the stock at "Buy" with a €98 price target, while JPMorgan stayed at "Neutral" with an unchanged €100 target. Jefferies analyst Ben Brown said revenue and adjusted operating profit beat consensus estimates and described the raised 2026 revenue guidance as conservative. JPMorgan's David H. Perry likewise called revenue and EBITDA better than expected.
The positive verdicts did not translate into a share price gain. Hensoldt slipped 0.1% to close at €80.84 as the sector came under pressure from Rheinmetall's lowered guidance, according to a dpa-AFX report. Adding a further wrinkle, media reports put the analyst consensus for revenue above €2.9 billion — higher than the company's new target.
PEGASUS remains a bonus, not the base case
The PEGASUS order is now expected in the first quarter of 2027, covering three aircraft and at least €1.1 billion. The timing remains an important anchor for future order intake, but the sensible approach is to judge the existing business on what is already visible. PEGASUS strengthens the longer-term picture if the award lands as anticipated; until then, Hensoldt should be measured chiefly on working through its current backlog.
Hensoldt at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The next confirmed date on the calendar is the company's capital markets day in London on 10 November.
On balance, the improved quarterly margin and the positive cash flow in the third quarter argue in Hensoldt's favour — provided the final quarter builds on them. The most valuable outcome would be a full-year close that brings revenue growth, earnings quality and cash generation together. That is where the convincing case for the operational strength will ultimately be made.
