Gold steadied itself after a midweek slide, with the metal last closing at 4,169.08 USD per troy ounce on Friday — a session that offered stabilization rather than a decisive breakout. Behind the flat tape sit two forces pulling in opposite directions: a Federal Reserve that has cooled rate-hike expectations without committing to anything, and a speculative community that had already trimmed its bullish bets before the relief arrived.

Kevin Warsh, the Fed chief, spent Thursday tempering talk of an October rate increase while pointedly declining to pre-empt the decisions ahead. Speaking in Bangkok, he gave no signal of a hike, and a softer dollar alongside falling US Treasury yields lent gold additional support. Reuters reported that anxiety over heavy spending on artificial intelligence had earlier driven money out of equities and into government bonds, and the resulting drop in yields worked in bullion's favor. What Warsh's remarks did not deliver was any pledge to hold rates steady — a distinction that matters as much as the relief itself.

Positioning data tells a more cautious story

Fresh figures from the gold futures market, published Thursday, point to restraint rather than conviction. As of Tuesday's snapshot, the "Managed Money" cohort held a net long position of 107,089 contracts — 3,898 contracts fewer than in the prior report. The group remains net bullish on higher prices, just less so than before. Because the data capture positioning at the survey date, they do not yet reflect the full response to Warsh's later comments.

That timing gap is the crux. The recent tailwind from lower yields is meeting a market in which speculators had already scaled back their optimistic tilt. Nobody can credibly call this a confirmed return of stronger confidence.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Gold?

Record fund holdings meet trimmed forecasts

Against that hesitant speculative backdrop, demand for physically backed gold funds has been anything but timid. The World Gold Council reported Monday that global September inflows into such funds reached 67.3 tonnes, worth close to 10 billion US dollars, lifting worldwide holdings to a record 4,256 tonnes.

Analysts, however, are looking the other way on near-term prices. Jefferies cut its 2026 average forecast to 4,511 USD from 4,595 USD, while leaving its 2027 target untouched at 5,000 USD per ounce. The bank's message is one of short-term headwinds set against longer-run potential — a lower nearer-term number is not the same as a uniformly bearish view.

Fund flows and price forecasts describe different things, and neither cancels the other. The inflows document purchases that have already happened; the projections express expectations about where prices go next. A record stockpile alone does not guarantee that the rally continues.

Gold at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

October 28 looms as the real test

The next Federal Reserve meeting runs October 27–28, with the rate decision and the subsequent press conference scheduled for the 28th. Until then, the gap between cooled hike expectations and an actual policy decision remains the defining tension. Whether gold's stabilization develops into something more depends heavily on the course the central bank ultimately charts.

For now, investors have added gold through funds at a record pace while Jefferies has pared back its short-term ambitions — two developments that sit side by side without either one resolving the uncertainty over the Fed's next move.
