Switzerland’s largest lender is heading into its first-quarter earnings report with a flurry of strategic moves that underscore its post-Credit Suisse transformation. Two days before unveiling the numbers, UBS announced plans to redeem $750 million in Tier-1 capital notes, while analysts project a pre-tax profit exceeding $3 billion — the strongest start to a year in the bank’s history.

The early redemption of the AT1 bonds, originally issued in June 2021, aligns with the first call date of June 2, 2026. The move signals confidence in the bank’s capital position and dovetails with a broader capital management strategy that includes a potential share buyback program of up to $3 billion for the current year. Regulators have been closely monitoring UBS’s capital adequacy since the Credit Suisse takeover, and maintaining a hard core equity tier 1 ratio of 14.4% — the latest reported level — would provide the necessary headroom for such shareholder returns.

Integration Synergies Drive Earnings Momentum

The market consensus points to a first-quarter pre-tax profit north of $3 billion, fueled by falling costs as the integration of Credit Suisse delivers tangible results. Analysts expect the bank’s cost-to-income ratio to decline significantly, with particular strength in asset management and the Swiss retail banking division. A key milestone came in March, when UBS completed the migration of all former Credit Suisse clients in Switzerland onto its own IT platform — a move that promises efficiency gains for the remainder of the year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying UBS?

Jefferies has set a fair value target of 55 Swiss francs on the stock, while Bank of America sees it at 46 francs. The shares currently trade around €36, having gained nearly 13% over the past month, though they remain below the 52-week high of roughly €41. For the full year 2026, analysts project earnings of $3.23 per share on average.

The $83 Trillion Wealth Transfer

Beyond the balance sheet, UBS is positioning itself for the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in history. A new internal report estimates that approximately $83 trillion will change hands globally over the next two decades. The bank’s research into the next generation of wealthy heirs reveals clear investment preferences: sustainable assets are gaining traction, with 37% of heirs already investing according to ESG criteria, while cryptocurrencies hold little appeal — only 11% hold meaningful positions in digital assets.

Traditional asset classes remain the foundation, with nearly 80% of respondents primarily invested in equities and bonds. However, the report highlights that many families delay conversations about inheritance, creating significant advisory opportunities for the bank. UBS is doubling down on classic wealth management to defend its market leadership among this emerging client base.

What to Watch on Earnings Day

When UBS releases its first-quarter results on Thursday, investors will focus on three key areas: the trajectory of operating costs following the IT migration, the sustainability of the 14.4% CET1 ratio that underpins the buyback plans, and whether management can deliver the synergy effects that would bring the year’s high back into striking distance. The real numbers must now validate the elevated expectations — and determine whether the stock can reclaim its lost ground.
