UBS Charts New Course with Dividend Boost and Board Reshuffle
07.03.2026 - 04:26:32 | boerse-global.deDespite a challenging start to the year for its share price, UBS Group is delivering robust operational performance. The banking giant announced a substantial dividend increase and a significant overhaul of its board of directors on Friday, setting the stage for its upcoming Annual General Meeting where the post-Credit Suisse integration strategy will be a key focus.
Sharper Cost Targets and Capital Objectives
As part of the ongoing integration of Credit Suisse, UBS management has tightened its financial discipline. The bank has raised its gross cost-saving target for the end of 2026 from $13 billion to approximately $13.5 billion. Capital goals have also been clarified: the Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio is expected to stabilize around 14%, while the return on CET1 capital for 2026 is now projected to be between 15% and 16%.
A Significant Return of Capital to Shareholders
The fundamental figures present a strong case, even as the stock has declined roughly 17% since the beginning of the year to trade at €33.15. The Board of Directors has proposed a dividend of $1.10 per share, marking a substantial 22% increase compared to the previous year. This move is supported by a full-year 2025 net profit of $7.8 billion. Profit in the fourth quarter alone surged 56% to $1.2 billion. Furthermore, the bank has completed a share buyback program worth $3 billion.
Strategic Reshaping of the Board
Concurrent with these financial decisions, UBS is reconstituting its leadership. Agustín Carstens and Luca Maestri have been nominated as new members of the supervisory board for the Annual General Meeting on April 15, 2026. These appointments signal a deliberate strengthening of expertise in regulatory affairs and financial management. In turn, three longstanding members—William C. Dudley, Jeanette Wong, and Vice-Chairman Lukas Gähwiler—will depart the board. Markus Ronner is slated to assume the role of Vice-Chairman.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying UBS?
UBS's strategy of combining enhanced shareholder returns with stricter cost control is a direct response to recent market pressures. Whether these measures will be sufficient to reverse the downward trend of the last 30 days will become clearer in the weeks leading up to the April AGM.
