The hydrogen fuel cell company that spent years burning through cash without turning a profit is suddenly offering investors something they haven’t seen in a long time: hard evidence of a pivot. After a 41% share price surge in April, Plug Power shares settled at $3.11 in the first week of May, slipping just 0.64% in a session that felt more like a pause than a reversal. The real action comes on May 11, when the company reports first-quarter 2026 earnings.

Analysts are bracing for a per-share loss of roughly $0.09 — a figure that, while still in the red, would mark a more than 57% improvement from the year-ago quarter. The market’s patience, it seems, is being rewarded with incremental but tangible progress.

From Margin Disaster to a Positive Milestone

The optimism has a concrete foundation. In the fourth quarter of 2025, Plug Power posted its first positive gross margin in years: 2.4%. That may sound modest, but it represents a staggering swing from the negative 122.5% recorded in the same period a year earlier. The company’s internal restructuring program, dubbed “Project Quantum Leap,” is targeting annual cost savings of $150 million to $200 million, and the numbers suggest it’s beginning to take effect.

Revenue for Q4 2025 reached $225 million, up nearly 18% year-over-year, while full-year 2025 sales hit $710 million — a 13% increase. Meanwhile, annual cash burn fell roughly 26% to about $536 million, signaling that management is gaining some control over the company’s once-unchecked spending.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

A Canadian Megaproject and a Data Center Bet

In April 2026, Plug Power secured one of the largest electrolyzer orders in its history: a 275-megawatt system for a green ammonia project in Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The client is Hy2gen, and the project is aimed at industrial decarbonization — a sector where hydrogen is gaining traction as a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

On a separate front, the company is tapping into the booming data center market. A deal with Stream Data Centers, tied to Plug Power’s project site in New York, is expected to generate at least $132.5 million in gross revenue. An additional $275 million is anticipated from the sale of power rights from hydrogen fuel cells, linked to a US hyperscaler project announced in November 2025.

State Support and the Path to Positive EBITDA

Plug Power’s liquidity position has been bolstered by a $1.66 billion loan guarantee program from the US Department of Energy, along with the extension of the 45V tax credits for green hydrogen. These measures reduce the company’s financing risk and support further expansion of production capacity.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The company ended 2025 with roughly $368 million in cash. Management has reaffirmed its target of achieving positive EBITDA by the fourth quarter of 2026, and plans to raise an additional $275 million by mid-2026 through asset sales and the release of security deposits. The strategy is a blend of operational improvement and disciplined capital management — a combination that, if successful, would reduce dependence on external funding.

Until the May 11 earnings release, traders are watching the resistance zone at $3.44, a level the stock has struggled to break. On the downside, the range between $2.90 and $3.00 is seen as a key support area. Whether Plug Power can hold its recent gains — and build on them — depends on whether the numbers due next week confirm that the turnaround is real, not just a fleeting improvement.
