OpenAI Jitters and a Texas Transformer: IREN’s Dual Narrative Unfolds

A single transformer component arriving in West Texas should be a cause for celebration at IREN. But the company’s stock is getting hammered by forces far beyond its control, as a Wall Street Journal report on OpenAI’s missed revenue targets sends shockwaves through the entire AI infrastructure complex. The juxtaposition of project milestones and market turmoil captures the precarious moment for this dual-purpose miner and cloud player.

The fourth and final large transformer unit has now landed at the Sweetwater 1 site, clearing the path for the 1.4-gigawatt facility to begin energization. Originally slated for April 2026, the timeline has accelerated sharply. The two Sweetwater campuses together are targeting 2 GW of capacity, both connected directly to the ERCOT grid with sub-10-millisecond latency to hyperscaler zones. IREN’s total grid-connected portfolio across the US and Canada now stands at 2,910 MW spread over 2,000 acres.

Yet on Tuesday, the stock closed down 8.11% at $44.44, with volume of 39 million shares well above the three-month average. The catalyst was a WSJ report indicating OpenAI is falling short of its user growth and revenue targets. CFO Sarah Friar has reportedly warned internally about funding constraints for future data centers. The timing could hardly be worse, coming just ahead of Big Tech earnings season.

The selloff was broad. CoreWeave lost roughly 6%, Nebius Group dropped over 6.5%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.49%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.90%. IREN’s dual exposure to Bitcoin mining and AI cloud services amplifies every sentiment swing. The company is simultaneously a crypto proxy and a hyperscaler wannabe, which means it catches both headwinds.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Analyst sentiment is fracturing. Bernstein cut its price target by $25 to $100 but still calls IREN a favorite among AI-focused Bitcoin miners. Cantor Fitzgerald lowered its target while maintaining an overweight rating, citing strong long-term AI infrastructure demand against tight supply. Freedom Capital holds at “hold,” pointing to delay risks and potential cost overruns. The consensus among ten analysts remains “buy” with an average target of $62.50, though the range stretches from $29 to $82 — a spread that screams uncertainty.

The financials from fiscal 2025 tell a story of explosive growth funded by aggressive spending. Revenue hit a record $501 million, up 168% year over year. Net income swung to $86.9 million from a loss of $28.9 million in FY24. Operating cash flow reached $245.9 million. But capital expenditures of $573.5 million pushed free cash flow to negative $327.6 million — the price of a GPU-driven data center buildout that is far from complete.

Adding to the pressure is a $6 billion at-the-market equity offering that hangs over the stock like a dark cloud. The dilution threat has kept IREN’s shares lagging peers, even as the company executes on its pivot from crypto mining to AI cloud services. Co-founder Daniel Roberts acknowledges the transition is still in its early stages, with hardware supply constraints acting as a brake on growth.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

All eyes now turn to the Q3 fiscal 2026 report due May 7. Investors want concrete numbers: AI revenue, GPU utilization rates, hard evidence that the strategy shift is delivering. The upcoming Big Tech earnings — Alphabet on April 29, followed by Microsoft — will set the tone. A strong Azure cloud showing could quickly dispel the OpenAI gloom. IREN has a close cloud partnership with Microsoft, making that report particularly relevant.

Sweetwater 1 must deliver, and soon. The transformer is in place. The grid connection is ready. The market, however, is asking a different question: is the demand still there to fill it?
