Hensoldt's Three-Pronged Strategy to Unlock Production Capacity

Defense firm Hensoldt tackles delivery bottlenecks with a 3-part strategy: securing chip supply, acquiring a key supplier, and hiring specialized labor to fulfill record contracts.

While its order book swells, defense electronics specialist Hensoldt faces the critical challenge of translating record contracts into tangible deliveries. The company is now implementing a coordinated three-part strategy designed to overhaul its entire supply chain simultaneously.

Financial Health Masks a Delivery Bottleneck

Hensoldt's financial fundamentals appear robust. The company reported an adjusted EBITDA margin of 18.4%, surpassing its own target, while free cash flow rose to €347 million. Management has provided guidance for 2026, forecasting revenue of approximately €2.75 billion with an EBITDA margin between 18.5% and 19%.

However, a significant structural issue is evident in the numbers. New orders worth €4.71 billion—representing a 62% increase—stand in contrast to revenue growth of just under 10%. This disparity is highlighted by an order backlog of €8.83 billion, a figure exceeding three times the annual revenue and underscoring the substantial delivery logjam. Hensoldt has announced plans to invest around one billion euros in capacity expansion between 2025 and 2027.

Attacking Constraints on Three Fronts

To address this backlog, the company is executing a multi-faceted plan. The first element focuses on securing critical semiconductor supply. A newly signed contract with United Monolithic Semiconductors guarantees Hensoldt 900,000 gallium nitride components through 2030. These high-performance chips form the technological core of radar systems, particularly for the TRML-4D radar. This system, supplied to several European nations under the European Sky Shield Initiative, is capable of tracking up to 1,500 targets simultaneously at a range of 250 kilometers.

The second initiative involves vertical integration within the supply chain. On March 5, Hensoldt signed an acquisition agreement for the Dutch optronics specialist Nedinsco. With roughly 140 employees across Venlo and Eindhoven, Nedinsco has manufactured components for Hensoldt periscopes for two decades. This established partnership is expected to simplify the integration process. The transaction, fully funded from existing resources, is scheduled for completion in mid-2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hensoldt?

The third pillar tackles a bottleneck that acquisitions alone cannot resolve: specialized labor. Hensoldt has entered a formal recruitment agreement with AUMOVIO, a Continental spin-off that is reducing its global workforce by up to 4,000 positions. At AUMOVIO's southern German sites in Ulm, Lindau, and Markdorf, up to 600 employees are affected—many possess the exact profile Hensoldt seeks in systems engineering and software development. The geographical proximity to Hensoldt's own facilities makes the transition feasible for affected workers. This recruitment agreement is effective until the end of 2026.

Investors Await Tangible Progress

The effectiveness of these three measures will be revealed incrementally. The first concrete data points indicating whether these investments are already shortening delivery times will come with the release of the Q1 figures on May 6. This follows the publication of the audited group financial statements scheduled for March 26.
