Investors in German defense contractor Hensoldt are bracing for a pivotal May, as a record order book collides with the practical challenges of fulfilling it. The company is set to report first-quarter figures on May 6, a release that will test analyst optimism against the reality of production bottlenecks. This comes amid a massive, self-funded expansion plan designed to close the gap between soaring demand and current output.

The scale of the challenge is clear. Hensoldt's order backlog stands at a historic €8.83 billion. Last year, new orders surged by 62%, yet revenue grew only about 10% to €2.46 billion. This execution lag is a key pressure point, reflected in a book-to-bill ratio of 1.9, meaning nearly two new orders are booked for every one delivered. For 2026, management is targeting revenue of €2.75 billion, a goal echoed by analysts at Bank of America who view the year as transitional.

To tackle the capacity crunch, Hensoldt is launching a billion-euro offensive. The company plans to invest approximately €1 billion in new facilities by 2027 and hire 1,600 new employees. A strategic cooperation with tech firm Aumovio will facilitate the transfer of up to 600 specialized workers from southern Germany. The expansion is complemented by the full acquisition of Dutch optronics specialist Nedinsco, a cash-funded deal expected to close by mid-2026. Further securing its supply chain, Hensoldt has locked in the delivery of 900,000 critical gallium nitride semiconductors from partner UMS through 2030, components vital for its in-demand Spexer radar systems.

Recent contract news underscores the robust demand. Hensoldt UK has finalized a deal to supply 50 coastal surveillance radars based on its SharpEye technology to SRT Marine System Solutions, with full delivery scheduled by the end of 2026. This bolsters the company's strategic push in its maritime segment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hensoldt?

Despite these operational strides, the share price remains under pressure. The stock recently gained around two percent, trading just above its 50-day moving average of €78.29. However, it still sits nearly 30% below its 52-week high of €115.10. A Relative Strength Index reading of 37 indicates the shares have been heavily sold in recent sessions.

Analyst opinions are divided ahead of the Q1 report. Deutsche Bank's Christophe Menard maintains a 'Buy' rating with a €101 price target, suggesting upside of roughly 23% from recent levels around €82. He anticipates solid quarterly numbers. Barclays takes a more cautious 'Equal Weight' stance, citing seasonal first-quarter softness and ongoing SAP implementation costs that will impact results through 2029. Its price target is €95.

A major shareholder is making a nuanced move. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has slightly reduced its total stake to 5.03%. Notably, the firm swapped indirect derivative holdings for direct shares, a move market observers interpret as a signal of continued commitment.

Hensoldt at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The annual general meeting on May 22 will see shareholders vote on a proposed dividend, with analysts forecasting a payout of €0.715 per share, up from €0.55 the previous year. Yet the immediate focus is squarely on the May 6 earnings. The figures will provide the first concrete evidence of whether the company's billion-euro capacity push is beginning to translate its record backlog into accelerated revenue, setting the stage for its long-term ambition of €6 billion in sales and a 20% operating margin by 2030.
