France Secures Atos Supercomputing Assets in Strategic State Acquisition
03.04.2026 - 06:05:48 | boerse-global.de
The French government has finalized its purchase of the strategically vital supercomputing operations from technology group Atos. While the transaction strengthens national technological sovereignty, it delivers less capital than initially anticipated to the struggling IT firm. The deal leaves Atos with the significant challenge of filling a substantial operational void.
Market Skepticism Persists Amid Overhaul
Investor confidence remains low as Atos executes its complex restructuring. The company's shares are among the worst performers in the sector this year, having declined by more than 32% since January. Trading recently at 35.19 euros, the stock sits well below its 200-day moving average of 44.11 euros, highlighting a persistent downward trend.
Management now faces the critical task of proving that remaining business units can absorb high restructuring costs without the revenue stream from the divested division. Operational stabilization is viewed as the primary hurdle to any sustained share price recovery.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Atos?
Details of the Sovereign Tech Deal
The acquisition by the French state encompasses Atos divisions dedicated to high-performance computing (HPC), quantum computing, and artificial intelligence. The agreed price reaches up to 404 million euros, which includes 104 million euros in conditional earn-out payments. These assets are considered essential for national security, particularly for simulating nuclear weapons tests.
However, the final valuation fell short of original market expectations. This is partly attributed to the exclusion of specialized data units, such as zData, from the agreement. For Atos, the sale means losing a high-revenue segment that contributed approximately 700 million euros last year.
Cybersecurity Division Stands Firm
Separate from the partial sale, Atos is reinforcing its position in digital security. The French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) has renewed the PASSI qualification for Atos Digital Security. This certification is mandatory for conducting audits of critical infrastructure operators and guarantees the company continued access to sensitive state contracts under France's military programming law. This segment represents a key anchor for the firm's future sovereign expertise.
