DroneShield is rewriting its playbook. The Australian counter-drone specialist has quietly raised the bar for what constitutes a reportable contract, while simultaneously rolling out a mobile anti-drone system that takes its technology off-road for the first time. The twin moves signal a company transitioning from a scrappy defence upstart into a more mature contractor.

The threshold for mandatory market disclosures has been lifted from A$5 million to A$20 million. Management’s rationale is straightforward: the average deal size has grown so much that reporting every mid-sized contract no longer makes sense. With the company now juggling 312 active projects worth a combined A$2.2 billion globally, smaller agreements simply don’t move the needle.

That pipeline is heavily weighted toward Europe and the United Kingdom, regions where DroneShield has been deepening its footprint. To meet the anticipated demand, the company is racing to expand manufacturing capacity to A$2.4 billion annually by the end of 2026. New assembly plants in Europe and the US are designed to shorten supply chains and speed delivery times for allied governments.

From Fixed Sites to Mobile Threats

The hardware itself is becoming more versatile. In a newly announced partnership with US robotics firm Overland AI, DroneShield has mounted its DroneSentry-X Mk2 system onto the unmanned ULTRA ground vehicle. The combination can detect and track aerial threats in real time while navigating rough terrain, a capability that opens up an entirely new market segment. Until now, most counter-drone systems have been tethered to fixed installations or static perimeters.

The financial underpinnings for this expansion are solid. Revenue surged 121 percent year-on-year to A$74.1 million in the latest quarter, while operating cash flow swung firmly into positive territory. Hamish McLennan joined the board in early May, bringing with him a share package and a mandate to oversee what promises to be a transformative period. His arrival coincides with a market capitalisation of roughly A$3.3 billion. The stock closed the week at A$3.61, though the ride has been anything but smooth. Over the past twelve months, the share price has oscillated between A$1.16 and A$6.71, and on a single day recently more than six million shares changed hands.

Investors will get their first chance to grill the new leadership team at the annual general meeting in Sydney on 29 May. CEO Angus Bean and McLennan are expected to outline how the company plans to convert its production targets into signed contracts. The market will be watching the cash position closely — DroneShield has raised significant capital in the past to build inventory for future orders, and those upfront investments now need to translate into revenue.

Back in Australia, the regulatory environment is shifting in DroneShield’s favour. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Department of Home Affairs are revising security guidelines for critical infrastructure, with updates expected by the end of the month. Stricter rules would almost certainly accelerate demand for counter-drone systems domestically.

Meanwhile, the company’s software ambitions are gathering pace. The AI-powered RFAI-ATK system, a software-as-a-service product, is undergoing extensive customer testing and is slated for a mid-2026 launch. If successful, it could provide the kind of recurring revenue stream that investors in defence tech have long coveted.
