Barrick Gold Corporation concluded its 2025 fiscal year with several record-breaking financial achievements, yet its forward guidance presents a more complex picture marked by operational challenges. The mining giant reported a fourth-quarter free cash flow of $1.62 billion and distributed substantial capital to shareholders, with earnings per share reaching $1.43—an 88% increase from the third quarter. However, projections for 2026 indicate rising expenses alongside a forecast for lower production volumes.

Shareholder Returns Reach New Heights

Driven by its robust cash generation, Barrick has implemented a fundamental revision to its capital return framework. The company now intends to allocate 50% of its quarterly free cash flow to shareholders. This will be delivered through a combination of an elevated base dividend, set at $0.175 per share each quarter, and an annual bonus component. Illustrating this policy, the Q4 dividend was declared at $0.42 per share, representing a 140% surge from the payout in the previous quarter.

Furthermore, the company’s share repurchase program totaled $1.5 billion for the full year 2025, retiring approximately 3% of its outstanding shares. In the fourth quarter alone, $500 million was directed toward buybacks.

2026 Outlook: Production Dip and Escalating Costs

The company’s operational forecast for the coming year tempers the celebratory mood from its recent financial performance. Gold production for 2026 is anticipated to be in the range of 2.90 to 3.25 million ounces. This follows an annual production decline of 17% for the full year 2025. Concurrently, all-in sustaining costs (AISC) are projected to climb to between $1,760 and $1,950 per ounce, a noticeable increase from the $1,581 per ounce reported in Q4 2025.

Key factors behind this cost pressure include higher prices for consumables, increased energy expenses, and the restart of the Loulo-Gounkoto complex in Mali, which Barrick resumed control of in December 2025. Whether the current gold price environment—the company’s outlook assumes a $4,500 per ounce price—can absorb these rising costs remains a pivotal variable for profitability.

Strategic Developments and Portfolio Optimization

On the growth front, Barrick is advancing key projects. At the Fourmile project in Nevada, the indicated gold resource was doubled for the second consecutive year, now standing at 2.6 million ounces of indicated and 13 million ounces of inferred resources. The exploration budget for drilling in 2026 has been increased to between $150 and $160 million.

In Zambia, the copper expansion at the Lumwana mine is progressing slightly ahead of schedule. Barrick expects copper production from Lumwana to reach between 190,000 and 220,000 tonnes in 2026.

In a parallel strategic move, the company is advancing preparations for a potential initial public offering (IPO) of its North American copper business, aiming to unlock additional value from these assets.

Stock Performance Shows Signs of Pause

Barrick’s equity has delivered a strong six-month performance, advancing 61.3% on the back of a rising gold price and its powerful quarterly results. This outperformed both the industry average gain of 53% and the S&P 500, which rose 6.1% over the same period. Recently, shares traded at $45.44; short-term momentum, however, suggests a period of consolidation, with seven- and thirty-day returns each showing declines of approximately 2.7%.

The company’s ability to effectively manage its cost structure throughout the current year will be a critical test for maintaining its elevated market valuation.
