Amazon is executing a three-pronged strategic expansion, channeling immense capital into initiatives designed to secure its future dominance. The company is simultaneously advancing in robotics for logistics, introducing a premium streaming tier, and funding an unprecedented infrastructure build-out for its cloud division, Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS: The Engine of Future Growth

The colossal scale of Amazon's ambition is most evident in its cloud business. In mid-March, CEO Andy Jassy communicated internally that AWS possesses a long-term pathway to reach $600 billion in annual revenue. This figure represents more than four times its current level of $128.7 billion, reported for the full year 2025. The division's momentum is accelerating, with Q4 2025 growth hitting 24% year-over-year—its fastest pace in 13 quarters.

To fuel this projected expansion, the company has earmarked approximately $200 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, the majority dedicated to AWS infrastructure. This aggressive investment is already impacting financials. Over a trailing twelve-month period, free cash flow declined to $11.2 billion from $38.2 billion a year earlier, a direct result of a $50.7 billion increase in investment spending. Despite this, Amazon's overall Q4 2025 performance was robust, with total revenue climbing 12% to $213.4 billion and operating income rising 18% to $25.0 billion. The equity's current trading price sits roughly 7% below its 200-day moving average, a level analysts suggest may already reflect the near-term pressure from these substantial outlays.

A Strategic Robotics Acquisition

In a move to revolutionize last-mile delivery, Amazon has acquired Rivr, a Zurich-based robotics startup specializing in "doorstep delivery" machines. The acquisition price was not disclosed. Notably, Amazon did not announce the deal through a public channel but first informed third-party partners within its delivery network.

Rivr's distinctive robots feature a hybrid design combining four legs with wheels, enabling them to navigate stairs and uneven terrain. The company trains its machines using proprietary AI models and its own datasets. Prior to the acquisition, Rivr had launched a pilot program in Austin with parcel delivery service Veho. Amazon was already an investor, having participated in a $22.2 million seed funding round through its Industrial Innovation Fund, established in 2022. In total, Rivr had raised approximately $25 million and was last valued at $100 million.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

Prime Video Ultra: Monetizing the Premium Tier

Starting April 10, 2026, Amazon will launch a new subscription tier called "Prime Video Ultra" in the United States. Priced at $4.99 per month or $45.99 annually, the offering bundles several premium features: ad-free streaming, support for up to five concurrent streams (increased from three), 100 offline downloads (up from 25), and exclusive access to 4K/UHD content and Dolby Atmos audio.

A significant shift is that customers who do not upgrade will lose access to 4K content, even as regular Prime members. Amazon attributes the move to rising production costs and the need to maintain a competitive premium streaming service. The new pricing aligns with recent increases by competitors like Netflix and Disney+, making the tier appear market-consistent. Should the model prove successful in the U.S., a global rollout is anticipated.
