Amazon is accelerating its efforts to build out the infrastructure necessary for artificial intelligence dominance. The company's latest move involves a multi-billion dollar commitment to establish new data centers, a plan that highlights its strategic priorities while simultaneously unsettling some investors concerned about short-term financial impacts.

A $12 Billion Bet on Louisiana

The tech giant has announced specific plans to invest $12 billion in constructing AI data centers in Louisiana. These new facilities are slated for development in Caddo and Bossier parishes, located in the northwestern part of the state. This initiative is a direct continuation of Amazon's strategy to amass greater computing power, a critical and often scarce resource in the current AI expansion cycle.

The project carries significant commitments for the local region. Amazon plans to create 540 direct full-time positions, alongside an estimated 1,700 additional jobs in the surrounding community. Furthermore, the company has pledged up to $400 million to modernize public water infrastructure in the area. Reports indicate that for cooling purposes, water will be utilized on less than 13% of days.

Addressing the Power Demand

Data centers are notoriously energy-intensive. To meet this substantial power requirement, Amazon is partnering with the Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO). According to reports, the company intends to cover 100% of the electricity costs for the new operations.

Construction will also generate significant short-term employment. In collaboration with STACK Infrastructure, approximately 1,500 construction jobs are expected to be created in the coming weeks. Overall, the project represents more than a simple technical upgrade; it is a large-scale infrastructure package with wide-ranging local effects, from employment to utility networks.

Investor Jitters Over Record Spending

The Louisiana expansion is a single component within a much broader and aggressive investment trajectory. Amazon has recently projected capital expenditures (Capex) of $200 billion for 2026, following an estimated $131 billion in 2025. It is this scale of spending that is causing investor anxiety, as heavy capital outlays typically place near-term pressure on free cash flow and margins, even when they are intended to secure long-term growth.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

This sentiment appears reflected in the actions of a major investor. Reports show that Berkshire Hathaway reduced its stake in the fourth quarter of 2025 by 75%, cutting its holding from 10 million to 2.3 million shares.

Operationally, Amazon's cloud division continues to perform robustly. In Q4 2025, AWS revenue grew by 24% to reach $35.6 billion. Meanwhile, the conglomerate's overall scale was underscored by its full-year 2025 revenue of $716.9 billion, a figure that allowed Amazon to surpass Walmart in annual sales.

Despite these strong operational metrics, Capex concerns are weighing on the stock market. Shares recently closed at €174.16, marking a decline of 13.25% over a 30-day period.

The forthcoming challenge for Amazon will be to provide further details on these record investments. The company must demonstrate that its capacity expansion can support the powerful growth of its cloud business without impairing short-term profitability more than the market currently anticipates.
