Consumer sentiment falls in October
The Westpac–Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index fell 4.7% to 80.4 in October from 84.4 in September, according to Westpac. The result was published on October 6, 2026, in an update attributed to Matthew Hassan.
Home-loan and deposit rates to change
Westpac said it will increase variable home-loan interest rates by 0.25 percentage points per year for new and existing customers, effective October 9. The bank also said the Westpac Life total variable rate with bonus interest will rise by 0.25 percentage points to 5.25%, according to the bank’s September 30 media release.
Westpac Chief Executive, Consumer, Carolyn McCann said the rate increase would add to cost-of-living pressures for many households, while higher deposit rates would benefit customers seeking to grow their savings.
