Mercedes-Benz Group reported a mixed third quarter on October 28, with China pressure weighing on its core Cars division while Vans and Financial Services supported earnings. The company's official Q3 release said group EBIT reached 1.77 billion euros, although adjusted group EBIT fell 15 percent to 1.78 billion euros.

Cars Margin Remains Under Pressure

Mercedes-Benz Cars generated adjusted EBIT of 560 million euros, down from 1.14 billion euros a year earlier. Its adjusted return on sales narrowed to 2.5 percent from 4.8 percent, reflecting weaker earnings from China, currency effects and higher spending on product launches and lifecycle measures.

Vehicle sales in the division declined 8 percent to 407,232 units, mainly because of difficult conditions and intense competition in China. Outside China, sales rose in Europe and the United States. Battery-electric vehicle sales reached a quarterly record, increasing 61 percent year on year, while the global battery-electric share climbed to 16.8 percent.

Vans And Finance Offset Headwinds

Mercedes-Benz Vans posted adjusted EBIT of 397 million euros and an adjusted return on sales of 9.4 percent. Its quarterly deliveries increased 1 percent to 84,421 vehicles, supported by North America and other markets outside China.

Financial Services delivered the strongest earnings momentum. Adjusted EBIT increased 42 percent to 445 million euros, helped by improved portfolio margins, lower credit costs and disciplined expenses. Its adjusted return on equity rose to 13.8 percent.
