- The Bank of England approval allows LSEG's digital securities unit to record ownership, service assets and settle transactions under sandbox supervision.
- The connection with HSBC Orion supports the UK's planned DIGIT digital gilt pilot and expands LSEG's role in digital market infrastructure.
London Stock Exchange Group's digital securities business has reached a new regulatory milestone. Ledger Insights reported on November 3, 2026, that the company's Digital Securities Depository received Gate 2 approval from the Bank of England for the UK's Digital Securities Sandbox.
The approval allows the depository to record ownership, service assets and settle transactions using distributed ledger technology under Bank of England supervision. It also covers a link between LSEG's infrastructure and HSBC's Orion platform, which is intended to issue DIGIT, the UK's planned digital gilt pilot.
Approval expands digital settlement reach
Under the arrangement, LSEG would act as an investor depository for DIGIT. Institutions could therefore hold and settle the instrument through either the LSEG or HSBC infrastructure, subject to the remaining regulatory steps.
Ledger Insights said both systems still require designation under settlement finality rules. That designation would give completed transfers statutory legal protection if a participant became insolvent. The approval therefore broadens LSEG's operating reach, but it does not by itself create a new earnings contribution or alter the company's published financial outlook.
The DIGIT pilot is designed to test distributed ledger technology across the debt issuance lifecycle. HM Treasury has appointed Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest and RBC Capital Markets as joint lead managers, with the first issuance targeted for the first quarter of 2027. For investors, the near-term significance lies in regulatory access, interoperability and operating experience in digital securities rather than an immediate change to earnings.
