BYD Company stock tests export-led recovery after profit miss

- BYD's third-quarter net profit rose 28% year over year, but the result missed analyst expectations.
- Revenue increased 14% as overseas sales offset weaker demand and intensifying competition in China.
- First-nine-month profit declined slightly despite largely flat revenue, keeping the recovery dependent on international expansion.
BYD reported stronger third-quarter earnings on Thursday, October 29, 2026, but the result fell short of market expectations. According to Morningstar, net profit rose to CNY 10.02 billion from CNY 7.82 billion a year earlier, while revenue increased to CNY 221.49 billion.
The figures represent year-over-year growth of 28% in net profit and 14% in revenue. Visible Alpha analysts had expected net profit of CNY 11.10 billion and revenue of CNY 240.83 billion, leaving both key measures below forecasts. Profit growth also slowed from the previous quarter, highlighting the pressure on margins and demand despite the return to revenue growth.
Exports Carry the Recovery
International expansion remained the main growth engine. BYD exported more than 550,700 new-energy vehicles during the quarter, more than double the year-earlier level, while total vehicle sales rose 19% to 1.3 million units. Overseas sales accounted for more than 40% of total sales, according to the Morningstar report.
The export push is helping BYD compensate for a more difficult home market. Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers face slower domestic demand and stronger competition, forcing the industry to seek additional volume and growth abroad. For investors, the central question is whether overseas expansion can continue to lift revenue without putting pressure on pricing, inventories and profitability.
Year-to-Date Profit Remains Under Pressure
The nine-month figures show why the quarterly improvement does not yet represent a complete earnings recovery. Net profit for the period ended in September fell to CNY 22.34 billion from CNY 23.33 billion a year earlier, while revenue was broadly unchanged at CNY 566.30 billion.
That contrast leaves BYD with a more constructive quarterly trend but a weaker cumulative earnings picture. The company is growing faster outside China, yet the broader result still depends on whether export momentum can outweigh domestic competitive pressure through the remainder of the year.
