Gautrain modernization program
Alstom said its scope within the Gautrain concession represents a cumulative contract value of EUR 800 million over 15 years. The program includes engineering, procurement and construction activities for rail-system modernization and refurbishment, eight new trains manufactured locally in Gauteng, a new signaling system, communications upgrades, fleet refurbishment and long-term maintenance services. The company said the order will be booked in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2026/27. Alstom’s announcement said the activities are intended to increase system capacity and train frequency.
Additional rail contract
In a separate announcement dated September 11, 2026, Alstom said it signed contracts worth EUR 1.2 billion with TransPennine Express for battery-electric trains and long-term maintenance. The agreements include approximately EUR 930 million for 29 five-car trains and around EUR 230 million in maintenance contracts. Alstom’s release said deliveries are planned from 2032.
