- WSDOT will close SR 706 near the Nisqually Entrance from 23 to 24 October 2026.
- The 23 October works will replace a second failing culvert and interrupt access from SR 706.
- Mount Rainier National Park was established on 2 March 1899 as the United States' fifth national park.
- The National Park Service records 236,381 acres within the park boundaries.
Mount Rainier National Park and a new SR 706 closure will affect visitors near Ashford from 23 October 2026, when a second failing culvert blocks the route to the Nisqually Entrance overnight. The Washington State Department of Transportation is carrying out the work before the region's storm season.
SR 706 closure cuts Nisqually access on 23 October
WSDOT will close State Route 706 at Kernahan Road East from 9pm on Friday, 23 October, until 6am on Saturday, 24 October. During that period, there will be no access from the highway to the Nisqually Entrance, according to the WSDOT closure notice.
The overnight closure follows earlier work on 16 October, when crews found another failing culvert nearby. The new structure will be covered with compacted gravel before the road reopens, while a small section east of Murray Road East will remain gravel until later paving work. Emergency services will retain access throughout the closure.
Winter works reshape access across the national park
The October restriction comes as seasonal and construction changes affect several parts of the park. The National Park Service says White River Road closed for winter on 19 October, while the Summerland Trailhead is closed during preparation for replacement of the Fryingpan Creek Bridge.
The same construction programme keeps pedestrians out of the White River Road closure zone beyond Fryingpan Creek Bridge, although cyclists may use the closed road while following crew instructions. The park construction programme says the Fryingpan Creek project is expected to continue through preparation in 2026 and active construction in later seasons. This links the short SR 706 interruption near Ashford with wider work on routes leading to the park's eastern areas.
The park remains open throughout the year, but the National Park Service says winter access is concentrated through the Nisqually Entrance for Longmire and Paradise. The Carbon River Entrance is currently inaccessible by road because of the SR165/Fairfax Bridge closure outside the park.
A fifth national park shaped around a volcano
Congress established Mount Rainier National Park on 2 March 1899, making it the fifth oldest national park in the United States. The site lies in west-central Washington on the western slope of the Cascade Range and contains 236,381 acres, with 97 per cent classified as wilderness.
Mount Rainier rises to 14,410 feet, or 4,392.2 metres, above sea level. That scale explains why road access is closely tied to weather, snow and construction: a local culvert replacement can alter the practical approach to a much larger landscape. The National Park Service identifies the Nisqually Entrance as the winter gateway to Longmire and Paradise.
Visiting Mount Rainier National Park: what travellers from Western Europe should know
- The SR 706 closure runs from 9pm on 23 October 2026 to 6am on 24 October 2026 at Kernahan Road East, with no highway access to the Nisqually Entrance during the work.
- The restriction concerns the main western approach from Ashford; emergency services retain access, while the road surface east of Murray Road East remains partly gravel after the culvert replacement.
- Winter visitors should check the park's road alerts because the Longmire gate and the route to Paradise can change with snow, avalanche conditions and road safety.
- Entry requirements depend on your nationality; UK travellers can check the FCDO travel advice at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice, Irish travellers the Department of Foreign Affairs at ireland.ie.
