teamLab Planets Tokyo in Toyosu, Japan, unveiled Body of Waves on 6 October 2026, adding a new artwork to its water-based museum. The announcement also covered expanded experiences in two existing works, giving visitors a current reason to include the venue in a Tokyo itinerary.
Body of Waves arrives at the Toyosu museum
PLANETS Co., Ltd announced the work at the Toyosu venue. Body of Waves is a large soft sculpture spread across the floor, and visitors enter it with their whole bodies rather than viewing it from outside. As people walk across the surface, their feet sink into the material and their movement deforms the sculpture.
The force created by one person travels through the flexible structure and reaches others sharing it. Lights flow from higher to lower parts of the changing form. The organiser describes the work as a space in which the physical properties of the sculpture connect the bodies of visitors. The Body of Waves announcement also records changes to Existence in the Flow Creates Vortices and Waterfall of Ephemeral Crystals.
How the new work fits the museum experience
The venue presents art that responds to people inside it. In Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity, visitors walk through water while the movement of koi responds to people and other fish. When the fish meet visitors, they turn into flowers and scatter.
Existence in the Flow Creates Vortices places visitors in a simulated flow. As they move against it, vortices form behind them. Waterfall of Ephemeral Crystals uses reflected light from water particles to create a waterfall of light, based on an earlier work inspired by a natural waterfall in the mountains of Shikoku. The official artwork guide lists these works alongside the new installation.
This combination links the October announcement to the character of the place itself. Body of Waves responds to pressure through a shared surface, while the water and light works respond to movement, presence or simulated flow. The result is a programme shaped around visitors entering the artworks rather than standing apart from them.
Tokyo venue continues through the end of 2027
The museum is in Toyosu, in Tokyo’s Koto-ku district, at 6-1-16 Toyosu. It opened in 2018 and the official venue information currently lists its term through the end of 2027. The site is operated by PLANETS Co., Ltd, with DMM.com as founding partner.
Access is available from Shin-Toyosu Station on the Yurikamome line, Shijoumae Station and Toyosu Market, or Toyosu Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line. The route includes dark spaces, unstable flooring and areas where visitors walk through water. Water can reach knee height for adults in some artworks, and visitors experience the water installations barefoot.
