The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba (Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba) hosts a sustainability forum on 11 November 2026 in Cordoba, Spain. The second International Conference The Harmony of Sustainability will examine how cultural heritage sites can manage resources and conservation responsibly.
Sustainability forum brings experts to the monument
The Cabildo Cathedral organises the event at the Centro de Información y Recepción from 9.15am on 11 November 2026. The programme is open to in-person participation and online viewing, with prior registration required through the monument's website.
Experts from the Holy See, ICOMOS Spain, the University of Cordoba, the University of Seville, Forética, Global Zero Waste and OCA Global are due to take part. Discussions will cover sustainable management of World Heritage properties, climate neutrality, efficient resource use and the circular economy, as the published programme describes.
The session will be moderated by Amanda Penélope García Marín, vice-rector for Sustainable Campus at the University of Cordoba. María Dolores Sánchez Galera of the Holy See is scheduled to give the opening contribution, followed by an outline of the cathedral chapter's institutional strategy from dean-president Joaquín Alberto Nieva García.
Heritage history gives the forum a specific setting
The conference takes place inside a building whose present form records successive religious and architectural changes. UNESCO says the Great Mosque was built in the eighth century over the remains of the Visigoth Basilica of San Vicente, expanded over three centuries and converted into a Christian cathedral in 1236.
Renaissance reconstruction between 1523 and 1599 produced the central structure seen today. The site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1984, while the protected property was extended in 1994 to include part of Cordoba's historic centre. These layers make the forum's focus on long-term conservation directly relevant to its venue, rather than a general city conference. UNESCO records the building's continued religious use as an important factor in its preservation, as set out in its World Heritage description.
The sustainability programme follows the presentation of the Cabildo's second sustainability report, covering the 2025 reporting year. The report evaluates patrimonial, social, economic and environmental effects, and the organiser says it records a 15.4 per cent reduction in the monument's carbon footprint during 2025. The forum is therefore tied to an existing management report as well as to future discussion.
