- A new lift and staircase are planned for Manarola station beside the Batternara tunnel.
- The Cinque Terre became a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in 1997.
- The illuminated nativity scene in Manarola begins on 8 December 2026.
Manarola and its railway station will be affected by a train suspension from 14 to 15 November 2026 as Rete Ferroviaria Italiana carries out accessibility works in the Cinque Terre village. The same hillside settlement in Liguria will then prepare for its illuminated nativity scene, scheduled to begin on 8 December 2026.
Rail services stop as Manarola station works begin
The Cinque Terre National Park says rail traffic between Corniglia and La Spezia will be suspended on 14 and 15 November 2026. The interruption is part of works at the railway stations in Manarola and nearby Riomaggiore, where RFI is removing architectural barriers and improving links between trains and local trails.
The Park identifies the railway as one of the main ways to reach the villages. Its rail works notice for 14-15 November says that the Manarola project will add a staircase equipped with a lift on the eastern side of the platform, close to the Batternara tunnel. The new route will connect the platform with the elevated section of the Via dell’Amore.
The existing access has a single entrance on the western side, reached through a pedestrian underpass with a flight of stairs. RFI plans to carry out much of the construction at night to limit disruption outside the specified weekend suspension.
Manarola links station access with a terraced landscape
The change concerns more than a station entrance. The new connection is designed to join a railway platform with the elevated Via dell’Amore, tying a transport interchange to one of the paths associated with the Cinque Terre villages.
Manarola sits in the municipality of Riomaggiore on the Ligurian coast. The National Park records historical evidence for the village from the second half of the thirteenth century. Its compact settlement includes the Church of San Lorenzo, built in 1338, a fourteenth-century bell tower and a restored old mill.
The surrounding landscape is formed by steep slopes and narrow agricultural terraces supported by dry-stone walls. The coastal settlements of the Cinque Terre developed between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, while the railway opened in 1874 and ended much of the villages’ earlier isolation. The Cinque Terre was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape in 1997.
The railway works therefore place a current access change beside a landscape shaped by centuries of movement between sea, fields and settlements. A separate regional tourism listing gives the next seasonal event as the Manarola nativity scene, organised by the Associazione Presepe di Manarola Mario Andreoli and starting on 8 December 2026. The regional listing for the nativity scene describes 240 illuminated figures using 8,000 bulbs.
