Constitution Hill is hosting Zero Is Greater in Johannesburg from 18 October to 13 November 2026, bringing a new art exhibition into the former prison precinct. The programme links seven South African artists with questions about HIV, tuberculosis and the country’s progress against both diseases.
Zero Is Greater brings seven artists to Johannesburg
The exhibition is presented by the Gates Foundation in partnership with Constitution Hill. It is located in the Women’s Jail, one of the historic sections of the complex, and remains on view until 13 November 2026.
The exhibition uses newly commissioned works to examine the human and public-health impact of HIV and TB. The operator describes four strands in the programme: Connect, Progress, Possibility and Imagination. Together, they move from personal experience and evidence of change towards questions about what a future beyond the epidemics could look like.
The participating artists are Siyababa Atelier, Serai Lobelo, Lebogang Mabusela, Lazi Mathebula, Sicelo Nene, Dr Ayobola Kekere-Ekun and Amy-Leigh Braaf. A related school programme runs alongside the exhibition, pairing a guided visit to the precinct with an interactive learning activity for learners in Grades 10 to 12. The programme announcement for Zero Is Greater gives the exhibition dates, venue and participating artists.
The Women’s Jail connects the exhibition with the site’s history
The setting adds a second historical layer to the exhibition’s subject. Constitution Hill developed from a prison and military fort, and the site now contains the Old Fort, Number Four, the Women’s Jail and South Africa’s Constitutional Court.
The Old Fort first opened as a prison in 1893. The prison complex closed in 1983, while the Constitutional Court’s permanent home at the precinct was inaugurated in 2004. The court was chosen for the site during the creation of democratic South Africa, placing a public institution devoted to rights beside buildings associated with incarceration and apartheid.
The operator says the precinct was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024. That status gives the exhibition’s themes of progress and social change a specific setting: visitors encounter new artworks inside a former prison complex that was later reshaped around constitutional democracy. The Gates Foundation’s background to the exhibition describes this relationship between the artworks and the site.
A temporary closure changes one November visit
Constitution Hill has also announced a site closure for 4 November 2026, when South Africa holds local government elections. The operator says visitors can return on 5 November, so the closure affects access during the exhibition’s run rather than ending the programme.
The precinct lies in central Johannesburg between Hillbrow and Braamfontein. The City of Johannesburg describes the publicly owned site as a 95,000 square metre heritage precinct containing the Constitutional Court, museums, exhibition areas and historic buildings. Its description of the Johannesburg precinct places the site within the inner city.
