Huellas del tiempo opens at Burgos Cathedral
The exhibition brings nearly 70 works from the ABANCA collection to two historic sites. The cathedral section is in the Sala Beato Valentín Palencia, while the Arco de Santa María presents a separate sculpture display. Cadena SER reports the exhibition dates as 14 October 2026 to 10 January 2027.
The project draws on a collection of more than 1,500 works. Its selection in Burgos includes artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies and Eduardo Chillida. The organisers have arranged the material as a passage through painting and sculpture from the early twentieth century to recent work.
The cathedral setting adds a Gothic historical layer
Inside the cathedral, the section Visiones maestras contains 32 works by 29 artists. It follows the development of painting and the visual arts from the early twentieth century to the present, placing modern and contemporary pieces inside a Gothic monument.
That setting began taking shape in 1221 and was completed in 1567. The building stands in the historic centre of Burgos and combines chapels, a cloister, tombs, stained-glass windows and a large collection of religious art. UNESCO records its Gothic history and World Heritage status. The exhibition therefore links a collection formed in modern times with a building whose construction extended across more than four centuries.
Two venues divide painting from contemporary sculpture
The cathedral presents the painting-led chapter, while the Arco de Santa María houses Espacio escultura. The second venue contains 37 works by 25 artists, including sculpture, installations and photography centred on volume, materials and three-dimensional form.
The exhibition was organised by ABANCA with the Burgos City Council and the Cathedral Chapter. RTVE describes the dual display as a meeting between contemporary works and historic spaces in the city.
