Magic Boy brings the Berkeley first show into sequence
Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings are presenting a Berkeley performance as a new archival album. Magic Boy draws on the first show at Berkeley Community Theatre and preserves its original running order. The official release details list 2LP vinyl, CD and digital editions.
A Music News announcement also identifies the album as a fully restored recording arriving on 16 October 2026. Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott are credited as producers. Kramer remixed the Berkeley tapes, while Bernie Grundman handled mastering.
Jimi Hendrix’s sound and the Experience line-up
Jimi Hendrix came from Seattle and built a musical language around the electric guitar. His official biography describes a blend of blues, rock, R&B and jazz, with psychedelic rock central to his best-known work. That range remains audible in the Berkeley material.
The recording features the final Jimi Hendrix Experience line-up. Hendrix plays guitar and sings, Mitch Mitchell plays drums and Billy Cox plays bass. The Berkeley tapes connect the trio’s live sound with the studio-minded period represented by Electric Lady Studios.
Why the Berkeley tapes matter to this release
The performance has also appeared in fragments on earlier posthumous albums. Magic Boy assembles the full first show rather than presenting isolated excerpts. Named tracks include Fire, Machine Gun, Ezy Ryder and Voodoo Child (Slight Return).
The album’s title uses a phrase associated with Hendrix, according to Janie Hendrix. Its Berkeley setting places the release within the concert history of the Experience while keeping the focus on a complete performance.
