James Brown’s funk vocabulary meets a Christmas programme
James Brown was an American singer, songwriter, arranger and dancer whose work connected rhythm and blues, gospel, soul and funk. His sharply accented rhythms and band arrangements helped establish the vocabulary of funk and influenced later hip-hop and popular music.
A Britannica biography describes Brown’s bands as important to funk’s development, particularly through horn players who worked as part of the rhythm section. The new collection places that musical identity beside a seasonal programme rather than presenting a standard single-artist set.
