Iggy Pop brings a punk voice to Mogwai’s post-rock

Iggy Pop is an American singer and songwriter associated with punk, hard rock and The Stooges. His early work and later solo albums established a musical identity that can move between abrasive rock, experimental textures and direct pop songwriting, as outlined in an AllMusic biography.

Mogwai are a Scottish post-rock group whose largely instrumental catalogue gives Underground a different setting for Pop’s voice. The pairing also has a musical prehistory: Mogwai previously used passages from an Iggy Pop interview in another track, whereas the new single is a direct vocal collaboration.

Underground anchors a wider Happy Tears package

Rolling Stone’s account describes Happy Tears as a collection spanning Mogwai’s career, with the Iggy Pop collaboration among its newly presented material. The release is planned for digital platforms, double CD and vinyl, while expanded editions add further recordings.
