girl in red’s bedroom-pop roots meet a wider alt-pop sound
Marie Ulven is a Norwegian singer-songwriter and producer who began the girl in red project with intimate home recordings. Her writing has centred on candid accounts of love, identity and difficult emotions, while the music has moved beyond its lo-fi beginnings.
Her catalogue includes the debut album if i could make it go quiet and the second album I’m Doing It Again Baby!. A NME profile of Ulven describes the second record as moving through pop, rock and country while retaining her direct writing style.
blue extends girl in red’s direct songwriting thread
The chart-topping track stays close to the emotional vocabulary associated with Ulven’s work, using a meeting after a relationship has ended as its central image. FM4’s description links the song’s colour imagery with memory and change.
That combination connects the number-one result with the project’s established focus on plainspoken feeling. The chart position therefore sits alongside a catalogue that has grown in scale without losing its personal centre.
