A study from Aalen University puts a hard number on the value of workplace reintegration management (BEM): every euro spent returns 4.80 euro. The BKK Dachverband puts the broader return on occupational health and safety measures at 2.70 euro per euro. These figures come as a legal change takes effect that resets the threshold for mandatory safety representatives.

The Bundestag passed an amendment to Paragraph 22 of the Seventh Book of the Social Code (SGB VII) on March 26. Since May 29, companies must appoint safety representatives only when they have 50 or more employees. The previous threshold was 20. For firms with 21 to 49 staff, the obligation now applies only in cases of special hazards. Businesses with 50 to 249 employees need just one safety representative, unless accident prevention rules demand more. Micro-enterprises with up to 20 employees remain exempt from the general requirement.

Practical training is one way employers are responding. On June 4, Lidl ran a specialized ergonomics workshop at its central warehouse in Schleswig-Holstein. Participants from administration, retail and logistics learned techniques for back-friendly lifting and carrying, plus how to take active breaks. The session went beyond theory: coaches worked directly on the warehouse floor and at office desks, adjusting cashier stools, demonstrating footrest use, and tailoring advice to real workstations.

Building a safe workplace means more than just training—it requires thorough documentation and up-to-date risk assessments. Lidl also takes health promotion to public events. At the Rock am Ring festival, the company offered yoga sessions in its "Rock Store," presenting wellness themes in a relaxed atmosphere.

The push for workplace health is backed by fresh survey data. A Civey and Factorial poll found 58.7 percent of employees report a rising workload. Nearly half of HR managers say sick leave rates are climbing. The financial consequences are tangible: the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) estimates that a single apprenticeship dropout costs an average of 6,478 euro.

Health insurers support corporate prevention programs through Paragraph 20b of the Social Code (SGB V). Group formats for trainees — covering exercise, nutrition or stress management — receive subsidies of 150 to 300 euro per year, depending on the provider.

Consulting firms are also requiring structured qualifications. Roland Berger runs mandatory bootcamps for new hires and specialists before career moves. These programs include not only technical development but compulsory training on artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, local initiatives complement the mix: the Saarpfalz district awards companies for outstanding performance in occupational reintegration management.
