Flat, flexible soles are the most back-friendly footwear, according to orthopaedic surgeon Markus Walther of the University of Würzburg. Shoes should leave enough room for the toes and be made from breathable material. Espadrilles make a good everyday choice. When wearing flip-flops, look for wide straps to help prevent claw toes. Thin soles beat thick ones because they encourage a more natural gait.

The connection between footwear and spine health often goes overlooked, but Walther's advice lands amid broader new recommendations for older adults. Two floor exercises, each performed for six minutes daily, are now being promoted to strengthen the back extensor muscles – particularly for people over 60.

The Six-Minute Routine

Published in early July, the exercise plan prioritises targeted strengthening over rest. The first move works the long back muscles with 10 to 15 repetitions, though more advanced users can progress to 20 or 30. The second exercise is isometric: hold a position for 15 to 30 seconds. Those who are fitter can aim for 45 to 90 seconds. The goal is to stabilise the supporting muscles around the spinal column.

When Dull Pain Signals Something Else

Not every ache in the lower back is orthopaedic. Doctors warn that underlying organic conditions can be at play. Besides herniated discs or spinal degeneration, gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis or stomach ulcers may cause the pain. Urinary tract issues – kidney stones or nephritis – are also possible.

More complex disorders like pancreatitis, endometriosis or irritable bowel syndrome sometimes present as back pain, too. If discomfort persists for more than several weeks, a medical diagnosis is essential.

The Bed-Rotting Paradox

Social media's "bed rotting" trend – lying in bed for hours – can occasionally aid mental recovery. But overused as an escape mechanism, it raises the risk of depression and sleep disturbances, which in turn indirectly harms physical condition.
