SAP is piling up proof points that its AI and cloud strategy is gaining traction, yet the stock remains stuck in a technical purgatory. The Walldorf software giant this week landed a multi-billion-euro government contract alongside T-Systems to build a centralised generative AI hub for Germany’s federal administration — a high-profile reference win that pits SAP’s “Business AI Platform” against the likes of Google. Meanwhile, Ericsson has deepened its relationship with SAP by adopting the Business Data Fabric to scale AI across its global operations.

The twin announcements underscore SAP’s push to embed its cloud platform as the data backbone for corporate and public-sector AI. But the market reaction has been subdued. On Friday, shares traded at €151.34, barely changed on the day. The stock has clawed back 3.57% over the past week and now sits just above the 50-day moving average of €149.52, but remains 25% below its 200-day average of €193.38. Year-to-date, the loss stands at 25.2%.

Technicians warn the rapid rebound may be running out of steam. The relative strength index has hit 86.9, signalling overbought conditions. That suggests near-term caution, even as fundamental optimists see significant upside. Analyst price targets average €221.25 — more than 45% above the current level. Deutsche Bank reaffirmed a €200 target on May 18, while Jefferies sees fair value at €230.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Beyond the Berlin contract, the public sector pipeline is expanding. Madrid’s city administration accelerated its SAP-based modernisation of tax and internal management processes last Thursday, adding to the string of government wins. On the industrial side, Martur Fompak International has deployed an automated material flow system controlled by SAP’s AI assistant Joule, citing higher throughput and fewer errors.

SAP’s management under Christian Klein continues to push the “autonomous enterprise” vision. At the Sapphire conference, the company unveiled more than 50 AI agents set to become available from the fourth quarter of 2026. The recently closed Reltio acquisition further bolsters the data management layer underpinning these tools.

Operationally, the numbers are starting to support the narrative. Cloud revenue grew 27% currency-adjusted in the first quarter to nearly €6 billion. For the full year, management targets operating profit in a range of €11.9 billion to €12.3 billion. Earnings per share for 2026 are forecast at €7.22 on a consensus basis.

The market’s next hard test arrives on July 23, when SAP reports second-quarter results. The Berlin win and the Ericsson expansion will not show up meaningfully in that print, but the broader cloud momentum — along with the Madrid progress and the first Joule robotics case studies — will be watched for signs that the AI transformation is translating into durable recurring revenue. Until then, the stock has to navigate the disconnect between a promising pipeline and a chart that still shows a 43% twelve-month decline and a 52-week peak of €271.60 that looks a long way off.
