German firms are scrambling to recruit environmental health and safety (EHS) experts as regulators ratchet up requirements for two common industrial substances and release a new handbook on explosion hazards. The push comes amid a broader shortage of specialists who can navigate the country’s dense web of chemical safety rules.

At the start of June 2026, GisChem published updated safety data sheets for hydrogen peroxide and the rubber antioxidant 6PPD—chemicals used everywhere from disinfectants to conveyor belts. The documents set detailed workplace protection and environmental assessment rules that companies must follow.

Staying on top of these new requirements means knowing exactly which hazardous substances are present in your workplace and what risks they pose. Many businesses unknowingly overlook chemicals that fall under strict regulations – an oversight that can lead to serious legal consequences. That is where a dedicated COSHH risk assessment toolkit can help: 43 customisable templates and checklists to identify and control hazardous substances, fully aligned with current UK regulations. For hydrogen peroxide solutions containing 60 percent or more, the classification has tightened. The new sheets list them as category 1 oxidizing liquids with acute toxicity risks if swallowed or inhaled. The workplace exposure limit is now 0.71 mg/m³, and experts warn that vapor concentrations of just 40 percent can create a serious explosion threat.

The antioxidant 6PPD, widely added to tires and conveyor belts, faces stricter scrutiny too. It is now classified as a reproductive toxicant (category 1B) and carries a 2 mg/m³ exposure limit. Because the substance is highly toxic to aquatic organisms, companies must comply with stringent environmental discharge rules.

Behind the tighter rules lies a growing regulatory burden that is reshaping the labor market. Businesses are urgently seeking specialists in chemical compliance and EHS who can produce safety data sheets, align operations with international standards such as REACH and GHS/CLP, and handle audits. Job ads specify a background in chemistry, familiarity with ISO standards, and experience in on-site inspections.

These compliance experts act as a bridge between workplace safety teams, regulators, and customer management. They track exposure limits and labeling requirements that apply to goods moving across borders. Meanwhile, time-sensitive approval processes add extra pressure. The Federal Office for Consumer Protection, for example, just granted an emergency authorization for the insecticide “Nermady” to control maize rootworm—a strictly limited approval that carries heavy fines for violations.

The growing regulatory burden makes it clear: solid risk documentation is no longer optional. A free toolkit with 41 ready-made templates and checklists can help you systematically record and manage workplace hazards – from fire safety to lone working – saving hours of paperwork. Even the technical side of safety is getting an update. The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) released a new manual on handling explosives. It spells out the demands of the CLP regulation and Germany’s Explosives Act, providing technical criteria to distinguish deflagrations from detonations. According to the manual, hearing damage can occur at pressure levels as low as 11 to 14 kilopascals. For larger quantities of net explosive mass, safety distances must be calculated based on expected fragment density.

The importance of precise emergency protocols was driven home by a recent incident in Göttingen. On a company site, 53-percent nitric acid leaked from a 60-liter drum. Firefighters had to contain the corrosive liquid with special binders and isolate the damaged container.

Employers now face a dual challenge: keep up with evolving chemical classifications and explosion-safety guidance, all while hunting for the skilled professionals who can make compliance work in practice.
