Rocket Lab's Stock Surges Past Analyst Targets Despite $816M Pentagon Win and Soaring Revenue

The market is pricing Rocket Lab for a future that Wall Street's models have yet to fully capture. The space contractor's shares hit a fresh 52-week high of $150.23 on Wednesday, closing the week near $149, as investors digested a string of contract wins and robust quarterly results. Yet the average analyst price target sits at roughly $97, leaving an uncomfortable gap between where the stock trades and where many experts believe it should be.
That disconnect — a stock up more than 400% over the past twelve months versus a consensus target nearly a third lower — hinges on whether the company can deliver operational proof to match its valuation. The catalyst for the latest leg higher came on May 28, when Rocket Lab completed the System Requirements Review for the Space Development Agency's TRKT3 program, a $816 million contract to build a low-Earth orbit satellite constellation designed to detect and track hypersonic missiles. The milestone clears the way for production on a platform that relies almost entirely on in-house components — Lightning satellite buses, Phoenix infrared sensors, StarLite optics, avionics and propulsion systems.
The TRKT3 award pushes Rocket Lab's total SDA contract volume past $1.3 billion, complementing an earlier $515 million order for the Transport Layer Beta Tranche 2. Combined with a $90 million U.S. Space Force deal to design, build and operate two GEO satellites — the company's first prime contract in geostationary orbit — the backlog swelled to $2.2 billion at the end of the first quarter, up 20.2% sequentially.
Revenue growth is validating the narrative. Rocket Lab posted a record $200.3 million in Q1 sales, a 63.5% increase year-over-year, with GAAP gross margin improving to 38.2%. The forward guidance points to even larger top-line figures: management expects second-quarter revenue between $225 million and $240 million, though gross margin is seen slipping to 33%-35% and adjusted EBITDA is forecast to remain in negative territory. That loss profile explains why the stock carries a negative price-to-earnings ratio of minus 469.47, even after the market capitalization ballooned to roughly $87 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab USA?
Analysts have been playing catch-up. Deutsche Bank, TD Cowen and Needham all raised their price targets in the first half of May, with some lifting them to $120. But even those updates leave the stock trading well above the Street's average. Cantor Fitzgerald maintains an Overweight rating, and the broader consensus from 18 analysts tracked by StockAnalysis remains a Buy, with targets ranging from $60 to $150. The upper end of that range has finally been touched, but the mean still sits at $103.91.
Operationally, Rocket Lab is building out capabilities beyond its core launch business. The acquisition of Motiv Space Systems — now rebranded Rocket Lab Robotics — adds robotic arms for NASA Mars missions. A July 2026 launch is planned for the Eta Space LOXSAT mission, which will test eleven cryogenic fluid management technologies on orbit using an Electron rocket and Photon spacecraft, a stepping stone toward orbital refueling for deep-space missions.
Insider selling raised eyebrows but is unlikely to signal bearish sentiment. CFO Adam Spice and President Marvin Bradford Clevenger offloaded a combined $11 million in shares, but the transactions were executed under pre-arranged 10b5-1 plans to cover tax liabilities from equity vesting.
Rocket Lab USA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The immediate test comes with the next quarterly report. If Rocket Lab can hit its revenue guidance and keep the adjusted EBITDA loss within the projected range, the current valuation will gain fresh support. Without further upward revisions to analyst estimates, however, the stock's trajectory will increasingly depend on momentum and sector enthusiasm — a precarious position for a company that has already priced in so much future success.
