Investors betting on the space economy are reaping extraordinary returns from Rocket Lab USA. The shares pierced an all-time high of $126.63 on Wednesday, extending a twelve-month rally that now stands at 480%. The latest leg higher was fueled by a potent mix of fresh Pentagon dollars, a strategic robotics acquisition, and quarterly results that smashed analyst forecasts.

Vertical Integration Takes Shape

The company has moved aggressively to bring critical technology in-house. Its acquisition of Motiv Space Systems, the Pasadena-based builder of the robotic arm for NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, will form the foundation of a new Rocket Lab Robotics division. The aim is to produce solar drives and robotic arms internally for planetary and national security missions. The deal follows the August 2025 purchase of Geost, a specialist in optical sensor technology, underscoring a push toward full vertical integration.

That strategy is already showing up in the order book. Rocket Lab's total backlog has more than doubled year-over-year to a record $2.2 billion. Defense work now accounts for roughly one-third of that pipeline. A recent $30 million contract with Anduril Industries covers three hypersonic test flights under the HASTE program, launched from the company's Virginia site. Separately, a $190 million Pentagon award adds 20 more HASTE missions. A major order from the Space Development Agency for 18 satellites further underscores Rocket Lab's shift from pure launch provider to full-spectrum space contractor.

Record Revenue, Operating Inflection

The financials are catching up with the narrative. First-quarter 2026 revenue hit $200.3 million, a 63.5% year-over-year jump. Management guided second-quarter revenue between $225 million and $240 million, while signaling a positive adjusted EBITDA of $23 million for the period—a milestone that caught Wall Street off guard. Analysts had penciled in a double-digit loss. The company still reported a net loss of $45 million in Q1, but that is common for a growth-stage business with a rapidly expanding backlog.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab USA?

Despite the headline numbers, the stock's valuation remains a subject of debate. Needham's Ryan Koontz lifted his price target to $120—a level the shares have already exceeded—while maintaining a buy rating. TD Cowen also raised its target to $120 after the quarterly release. The average analyst price target sits near $96, well below current trading levels.

Neutron Looms as the Next Catalyst

All eyes are on the Neutron rocket, designed to lift 13,000 kilograms to orbit. Its maiden flight is slated for late 2026, and prediction markets currently give it a 52% probability of success before year-end. A successful debut would open the medium-lift segment and potentially unlock the next growth phase.

Additional sector-wide attention is building around a potential SpaceX initial public offering, with roadshow rumors pointing to a June start. Rocket Lab stands to benefit as one of the few publicly traded pure plays in space infrastructure, drawing investor interest that may otherwise flow to SpaceX.

Insider Profit-Taking Adds Cautionary Note

The breathtaking rally has not gone unnoticed by prominent sellers. Cathie Wood's ARK funds unloaded approximately 250,000 shares over two trading sessions, worth around $26 million, rotating the proceeds into artificial intelligence and defense plays. Empire Life Investments, by contrast, boosted its position by nearly 20%, signaling that institutional sentiment remains split.

Rocket Lab's transformation from a small-launch specialist to a vertically integrated space supplier is undeniable. But with the stock already pricing in a successful Neutron debut and a $2.2 billion backlog that still carries execution risk, the next few quarters will test whether the market's enthusiasm is justified—or whether it has gotten ahead of the rockets themselves.
