A senior figure in executive search is pushing back against the rush to automate talent acquisition, arguing that algorithm-only placements risk long-term hiring failures. Bert F. Wendeln, president of the Carlisle Group, called for a return to craftsmanship in personnel consulting. His warning: purely data-driven matching lacks the structural integrity needed for sustainable placements, and fast, automated setups undermine the eventual success of a hire. Wendeln insists on human judgment over mere data selection.

The debate comes at a time when the global talent-acquisition market is anything but sluggish. In early June, demand for senior recruiters remains high, particularly in Germany’s Rhineland and southern states. Nearly 30 lead talent-acquisition positions are currently open around Cologne alone. Employers hunting for those roles include the TÜV Rheinland Group, Kienbaum Consultants International, the Bauwens Unternehmensgruppe, and the ASB Alten- und Pflegeheime Köln.

Further south, the drive is equally intense. In Taufkirchen, companies are looking for talent-acquisition managers, offering annual salaries between €46,000 and €65,000. Stuttgart has a growing need for experts in international skilled-worker recruitment, with one firm specifically advertising a manager for innovation and processes with a focus on artificial intelligence. Tech interface roles are said to be particularly sought after.

The search extends well beyond German borders. In the United States, the architecture firm Gensler is recruiting a head of talent acquisition in Dallas, concentrating on design and architecture professionals as well as process optimisation using Workday and Tableau. Empower, the financial-services company, listed 148 open positions as of 7 June, including talent-acquisition consultants in the US and technological roles in India and the Philippines. Compensation for top-tier talent is reaching striking levels: an executive director for payer accounts at Edgewise Therapeutics earns between $250,000 and $300,000 annually.

Alongside day-to-day recruiting, strategic appointments are also reshaping the landscape. Management consultancy Roland Berger named 17 new partners and four senior partners in May, underscoring its growth ambitions in sustainability and smart mobility. Meanwhile, Sanlam Allianz announced a leadership change at its supervisory board in Kenya effective 4 June: Dr Martin Oduor-Otieno takes over the chair from Dr John P.N. Simba, who retired after two decades. Allianz Partners is simultaneously expanding its footprint in the Pacific by acquiring a travel-insurance portfolio in Australia and New Zealand.

Emerging talent is also in the spotlight. The finalists for the VNAB Young Talent Award have been announced, featuring specialists from AIG and Allianz. Their work will be recognised at a ceremony in Zeist in September.
