In his first encyclical, titled Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV has taken a clear stance on the ethical limits of artificial intelligence. The document, released ahead of next week’s Caritas congress in Berlin, warns that technological superiority must never be allowed to justify antidemocratic claims to power. Human dignity and the common good, the Pope argues, must remain the binding yardsticks for all technological development.

The timing is deliberate. From June 24 to 26, 2026, the German Caritas Association will hold its seventh Caritas Congress under the motto “Zusammen geht was. Caritas verbindet Generationen.” The gathering brings together experts and practitioners to explore innovative ways of bridging generational divides and navigating multiple societal crises. One exhibit at the congress comes from the Berufsgenossenschaft für Gesundheitsdienst und Wohlfahrtspflege (BGW), the statutory accident insurer for healthcare and welfare workers.

But the philosophical questions about AI are not the only weight on the agenda. The congress is convening at a moment of acute fiscal pressure on Germany’s long-term care insurance system, the Pflegekasse. Federal Health Minister Warken (CDU) has proposed drastic cuts to close a deficit of €22.5 billion. Her plan calls for slashing pension insurance contributions for family caregivers by 30 percent — a move that would yield €1.8 billion in savings in 2027 and cumulatively €7.8 billion by 2030.

The backlash has been swift and broad. Caritas, the Social Association of Germany (SoVD), and the SPD have all voiced sharp criticism. In addition to the contribution cuts, the minister is considering raising the contribution assessment ceiling to €77,400. Planned hearings on the reform have been put on hold for now.

While the care fund debate dominates policy discussions, practical intergenerational projects are already running on the ground. In Steinhagen-Amshausen, a day-care facility for the elderly and a primary school have been collaborating for five years. Weekly joint activities bring children and seniors together, with the aim of fostering mutual respect and patience. The congress will showcase such models as blueprints for wider adoption.

Adding to the month’s calendar of events, the Cologne-based Protestant Church Association is holding a “Week of Diakonie” from June 13 to 21 under the hashtag #raumgeben. Proceeds from a social gathering at the Kartäuserhof on June 18 and 19 will support people in church asylum.

Debt counseling is also in the spotlight. On June 17, Caritas in Regensburg will join a nationwide action week. Germany sees an estimated 300,000 to 350,000 bank account garnishments each month. Experts will advise on the protected account (P-Konto) as a way to shield households from financial ruin.

Meanwhile, the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) is launching a virtual event series titled “Resilienz im Epochenbruch.” It kicks off on June 9 with IW Director Michael Hüther and Professor Markus K. Brunnermeier. Summer sessions will cover social partnership and public finances; infrastructure takes center stage in September.

Success stories also punctuate the news. The Lebenshilfe Syke celebrated its 60th anniversary in early June. The association supports around 1,400 people and has run an inclusive housing project since 2014 — a flagship initiative in Lower Saxony. And the Archdiocese of Cologne’s faith festival “kommt und seht” on June 5 and 6 drew up to 2,000 participants. Buoyed by high demand, the church announced the creation of four new parishes.

As the Caritas Congress approaches, the interplay between ethical technology debates, an ailing care system, and grassroots social action will be under intense scrutiny — not least because the decisions made in Berlin over the next weeks will shape how millions of Germans age, care, and connect across generations.
