Pentagon Scrap Deal Fuels IperionX’s Round-the-Clock Titanium Push

IperionX has secured a rare gift from the Pentagon: roughly 290 tonnes of titanium scrap, handed over at zero cost. The windfall, enough to cover the company’s raw material needs for the next 18 months, arrives just as the advanced-materials specialist cranks its Virginia plant into continuous 24/7 production. The market wasted no time rewarding the operational milestones, with shares surging nearly 15 percent on Wednesday to EUR 3.21.

The US Department of Defense seldom gives away strategic resources, but the arrangement underscores Washington’s push to shore up domestic supply chains for critical minerals. IperionX will feed the scrap into its proprietary hydrogen-assisted metallothermic reduction (HAMR) process, which sidesteps the energy-intensive Kroll method used by traditional titanium producers. The facility’s entire HAMR system is now online, enabling uninterrupted manufacturing. In March alone, output hit 4.2 tonnes, translating to an annualised production rate of roughly 50 tonnes.

Alongside the scrap deal, the company has commissioned a new Calibur3 3D-printing machine at the 6,500-square-metre Virginia campus. This unit will produce complex, mission-critical components directly for the US military, dramatically improving material yield compared with conventional fabrication techniques. An existing framework agreement allows various branches of the armed forces to place orders flexibly. While the Army and Navy have been the primary customers so far, potential applications for the Air Force are now moving into focus.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IperionX?

The stock’s recent gains extend well beyond Wednesday’s jump. On a weekly basis, the shares have climbed more than 27 percent, and long-term holders are sitting on a year-to-date advance exceeding 60 percent. The secondary article, however, noted a more modest single-day rise of 7 percent to EUR 3.00, reflecting the stock’s notoriously choppy trading pattern. With volatility topping 110 percent, the ride has been anything but smooth. The price still trades below its 50-day moving average, suggesting the market remains cautious about the company’s aggressive growth targets.

Management is already looking well beyond the current 50-tonne run rate. By the end of 2026, IperionX aims to quadruple capacity to 200 tonnes annually, with a longer-term ambition of surpassing 10,000 tonnes by the end of the decade. The scrap from the Pentagon provides a secure feedstock base for the immediate scaling phase, while the company’s GenX technology platform continues to evolve. Further details on raw-material sourcing are expected later this quarter, when IperionX delivers an update on its Titan Critical Minerals Project.

For now, the Virginia facility has given IperionX the physical foundation to serve the growing market for high-performance titanium products on a continuous basis. The Pentagon’s willingness to part with 290 tonnes of scrap—and the shift to round-the-clock production—signals that the company is moving from pilot-scale promise to industrial reality. Whether the stock’s lofty valuation, with a price-to-book ratio above 10, can be justified will depend on how quickly management can turn that reality into sustained, profitable output.
